UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID POWELL, OF FLEMINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,154, dated December 29, 1885.
Application filed November 3, 1885. Serial No. 181,786.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flemington, in the county of Taylor and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Gar-Coupling; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure I isa longitudinal section showing the coupling fastened; Fig. II, a top or plan view; Fig. III, a view partly in elevation and partly in section; Fig. IV, a horizontal section of one draw-head.
This invention relates to car-couplings for securing together the several cars in a train, and more especially for coupling automatically when two cars are run together.
In the annexed drawings, the letters A and B represent two draw-heads, which are held to the draft-bars O D, and are fastened to the cars in any of the well-known ways. These draw-heads are precisely alike, except that only one of a pair has the hook, as hereinafter explained. The draw-head has a chamber, a, with a slot, 12, in its top, on each side of which is a cheek-piece, b, downwardlyflaring lip c in front, at the bottom, back of which is a projection, c. In the bottom is a hole, a, to allow snow and water to run out. Above this hole there is placed in the drawhead the transverse bolt E. Through the draw-head there are made, one on each side of the chamber a, the aligned holes 6 e, in which is placed the bolt E. On the outside, at the entrance of hole 6, the draw-head has in its side a vertical recess, f. This recess projects behind strips f f, forming rabbets on each side. The hole 6 is countersunk to receive the head of the bolt E. Fitting the rabbeted (No model.)
recess f is a slide or look, G, corresponding in shape therewith, the head gof said lock fitting in shoulders f at the top of the recess. Back of the bolt E a weight, H, is hinged to the top of the draw-head by a bolt, 6 said weight straddling the pieces I), and its heavy front It rests on the draw-head when down,
just above the bolt E.
The letter I represents the coupling-bolt, which has a hook, it, and eye is. This bolt is held by one bolt E passing through the eye k, and its hook it catches on the other bolt E when the cars are coupling. These drawheads are placed at opposite ends of cars, and when the latter are run together the hook It of bolt I strikes the lip c, and, riding up, falls over the bolt E and the cars are coupled. If weight H be down, the bolt lifts it, and it falls back on the bolt, holding it against accidental displacement. If the weight is up, the jar drops it.
To uncouple, lift Weight H, and then the bolt I,if there be sufficient slack. If not, then withdraw slide G and slip out the bolt E. By this latter construction the bolt I can be shifted from one car to another.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1. The combination of the draw-head A, having the bolt E and weight H, and the drawhead B, having a similar bolt and weight, with the coupling-bolt I, as set forth.
2. The draw-head A, having the transverse aligned holes 6 e, the rabbeted recess f at the outer end of one hole, and such outer end be countersunk, in combination with the headed bolt E and the slide G, the latter corresponding with the recess f, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID POWELL.
