NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HENRY BROOKS, OF WEST POINT, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO L. T. OARLISLE, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369.685, dated September 13, 1887.
Application filed June 29, 1887. Serial No. 242,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vest Point, in the county of Clay and State of Mis sissippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing two drawheads coupled together. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the draw-head on line as x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the coupling-link, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the coupling-dog.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the draw-head secured to the bottom of the car at the end of the same in the usual manner. The bottom of the draw-head at its forward end is given a downward inclination, as shown at a, whereby the coupling-link will be guided up into the draw-head in proper position to be engaged by the coupling-dog. At the head of this incline, on opposite sides of the bottom of the draw-head, I provide the guides or guards B, which serveto maintain the link in its proper position and prevent lateral play of the same. The draw-head is also provided with the aligned openings 0 O in its top and bottom, through Whichapin, D, is passed to secure the link in the draw-head.
E designates the couplingdog or tumbler, which is hung upon a transverse shaft, F, having its opposite ends mounted in the opposite sides of the draw-head and held in place by the caps G, bolted thereto. The coupling-dog is provided with the depending lug or shoulder H and the rearward extension, I, to the upper side of which I secure one end of a rope or chain, J, which extends to the top or side of the car to facilitate uncoupling.
K designates the link, consisting of a metal (No model.)
bar having the enlargement L at one end, provided with the rear shoulder, M, and having the offsets or projections N on its opposite sides at its other end. These offsets rest between the guards in the draw-head, and thereby hold the link to its position. Between these offsets the link is provided with an opening, 0, through which the pin D passes, to secure the link in the drawhead.
The operation of my device is simple and L will be readily-understood. The link is secured in one draw-head by means of the pin D, and the two draw-heads then brought together. The free end of' the link enters the opposing draw-head, and, striking against the to coupling-dog, will raise the same and pass thereunder, the shoulder M of the link and the shoulder H of the coupling-dog automatically engaging, as will be readilynnderstood. To uncouple, the rope or chain J is operated to 6 raise the dog and disengage the same and the link.
It will be seen that I have provided a cheap, simple, and etlicient coupling, which can be readily operated without the attendants going between the cars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the opposing draw-heads 7 having the guards B on their bottoms, the coupling-link having the shoulder M at one end and the offsets N at its other end, resting between the guards B, the pin D, passing through said end of the link and the drawhead, and the coupling-dog in the other drawhead, having the lug H, engaging the shoulder M of the link, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
GEORGE HENRY BROOKS.
Witnesses:
J. W. SoooK, J. S. APPLEWHITE.
