CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,567, dated January 4, 1887.
Application filed October ll, 1886. Serial No. 215,888. (No modem To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN SHILL, a resident of the city of Omaha, county of Douglas, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description,
reference being had to'theaccompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of, devices, that will be more fullyset forth hereinafter, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
' In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of acar-coupling embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the same.
A represents the draw-head, which is made of two longitudinal sections, a, placed side by side and secured together by a transverse bolt, B. The head on one end of the bolt is countersunk in one side of the draw-head, and the nut on the threaded end of the bolt is countersunk in the opposite side of the draw-head.
The mouth 0 of the draw-head is flared outwa'rdly, and in the lower side thereof, at a suitable distance from the outer end, is made a recess, D, the lower side of which is inclined, as at d, and on the front side of the said recess is made a shoulder, E. The rear side of the mouth is formed by a vertical shoulder or abutment, F, in which, near its uppenside, is made a vertical recess, G. In the said recess is located an anti-friction roller, H, which is free to rise and fall.
A vertical opening, I, is madein the upper side of the draw-head,and communicates with the mouth 0, and extends from the abutment F outwardly a considerable distance. In the lower side of the draw-head, between the recess D and the abutment F, is made a vertical opening, K.
L represents a latching-lever, comprising the vertical arm M, which extends downwardly through the opening K, the forwardly and upwardly extending arm N at the upper end of the arm M, and the vertical arm 0 at the upper end of the arm N, which projects from the front side of the opening I. From the front side of the vertical arm M projects an inclined stop, P, which normally rests upon the incline Id and supports the latching-lever.
The rear side of the said lever bears against the roller H, and on the lower end of the vertical arm M of the latching-lever is secured a nut or head, R, the function of which is to prevent the latchinglever from being drawn up from the'draW-liead and disengaged therefrom.
S represents a lever, which is fulcrumed to the front end of the car to which the drawan ordinary coupling-pin.
V represents a coupling-link, that is pro vidcd at one end with an opening, X, and at the opposite end with a depending shoulder, Y, which is inclined on its front side, as at Z. The coupling-link is secured to the drawhead of a car having the ordinary form of'pin-andlink coupling by passing the coupling pin through the opening X.
In order to couple the cars together, the coupling-link is guided into the mouth 0 of the draw-head, strikes against the inclined arm-N of the latchinglever, so as to raise the latter, and the shoulder Y of the link drops behind the shoulder E of the draw-head into therecess D,and the latching-lever drops down upon the end of the link and locks in engagement with the shoulder E of the draw-head,
thus effectually and automatically coupling the cars together.
In order to uncouple the cars it is only necessary to raise the lever S, so as to raise the latching-lever and cause the stud P thereof to bear under the end of the link and'disengage its shoulder from the shoulder E, and thereby permit the link to be readily withdrawn from the draw-head.
The function of the anti-friction roller is to prevent the latching-lever from binding in th draw-head. i
When both the cars to be coupled together are provided with my improved form of draw head, I employ a coupling-link having the shoulders Y at both ends.
The openingsV enable the car to be coupled to another with the ordinary form of pin-andlink coupling.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- .1. In a car-coupling, the draw-head made of two longitudinal sections, 13, having the recess D formed between their opposing sides, and the bolt E extending transversely through the said sections to secure them together, the said bolt being arranged at the front upper side of the recess D, and thereby forming a shoulder at the front side of the said recess for the retention of the shouldered coupling-link, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a car-coupling, of the draw-head, having the anti-friction roller, and the latching-lever bearing against the said roller, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
3. i The combination, in a car-coupling, of the draw-head, having the shoulder E in its mouth and the recess D in rear of the said shoulder, with the coupling-link having the shoulder to engage the shoulder E, and the verticallymovable lever L, having the forwardly and upwardly inclined arm N in the draw-head, and the projecting inclined stop P, to strike the lower side of the recess D, and thereby limit the descent of the lever L, the said stop being arranged under the arm N and located in the recess D, and thereby adapted to dis engage the coupling-link from the shoulder E when the lever L is raised, substantially as described.
