UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LIVY D. MURPHY, OF INDEPENDENCE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. PHILIP KNOOHE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,131, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed September 23, 1893- Serial No. 486,284. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LIVY D. MURPHY, of Independence, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers, and the objects of my invention are to provide a device of this kind, which is simple, strong and durable, and inexpensive of construction, which will automatically and positively couple cars when brought together for that purpose, and which may be used in connection with any of the usual link carrying draw-heads now in use.
With these objects in view my invention consists in its peculiar construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved coupler in its uncoupled or inoperative position, Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal section of the coupler and shown in its coupled or operative position. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of the pivotal trip-block. Fig. 4, is a detail view of the cylindrical rod or bolt upon which the trip-block is pivotally carried.
In the said drawings, 1 designates the drawhead provided with the usual draw-bar 2, and this draw-head is provided with the usual flaring mouth, 3, communicating with the recess 4t, and the upper converging wall of the flaring mouth 3, is extended downwardly a suitable distance, as at 5, and the transverse cylindrical recess 6, is formed in the rear or inner side of said extension. Extending horizontally through the draw-head, and the recess 6 is a rod 10, and this rod is secured firmly in position by means of a nut 11 which is screwed upon its projecting end. Pivotally mounted upon said rod within the draw-head and extending in its normal or inoperative position, obliquely downward and to the rear is a trip-block 12,'and this trip-block carries revolubly in the recess formed in its front and lower margin the anti-friction roller 13, which rests upon the lower wall of the recess 4:, adjacent to the rear margin of the vertical passage 8. This trip block is also provided with a hole or aperture 14: through its central por tion', and at the rear or lower margin of the said aperture shoulders 15 and 16 are provided; the shoulder 15 being horizontal and the shoulder 16 being vertical or approximately so, when the trip-block is in its normal inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 1. the trip-block is in its inoperative position, the cars are uncoupled and the lower end of the pin 9 rests upon the horizontal shoulder 15, and the vertical shoulder 16 adjacent to the rear side said pin prevents the pin from accidental displacement toward the rear. The pin and the block being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the link carried by the opposing draw-head enters the mouth 3 and striking against the trip-block forces it pivotally to the rear, and to the position shown in Fig. 2, with the anti-friction roller resting upon the upper side of the link. As soon as the tripblock is moved a sufficient distance, the pin 9, by gravity descends and passing through the link engages the passage 8 in the lower portion of the draw-head and secures the cars together.
The coupling pin is adapted to be connected to lifting mechanism of any suitable and ordinary construction whereby it may be raised to allow the link to be withdrawn, and the tripblock to swing forwardly to its original position. Thepinisnowreleasedsothatitdescends and rests upon the shoulder 15 as before. By providing the anti-friction roller 13 it will be When seen that friction between the lower wall of the draw-head and the trip-block, and the link and the trip-block is decreased to the minimum, so that no binding will result in the operation of the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a car-coupler, of a drawhead having vertically aligned pin passages, of a pin-supporting trip-block pivoted within said draw-head, and provided with an antifriction roller at its lower end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, LIVY D. MURPHY.
