H.Y MEGORDEN. GAR GOUPLING. No. 439,967. Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
. .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I'IOLIVER MEGORDEN, 0F FARMINGTON, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,967, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed May 28, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HoLIvER MEGORDEN, of Farmington, in the county of San Juan and Territory of New Mexico, have invented a new and improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved car-coupling, which is simple and durable in construction and automatic in coupling the cars.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement as on two cars ready for coupling. Fig. 2 is a front view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the improvement on the line y y of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the improvement on the line w ot' Fig. 3.
The draw-head A., on which the car-coup ling is applied, is provided in its front with an opening B, into which is adapted to pass one end of a coupling-link C, provided at each end with a head D or D', forming on top shoulders E and E', respectively, and which are adapted to pass into a recess B of the draw-head, as is plainly shown in Fig. 5. The headsD andD are adapted to be engaged by a transverselyextendin g lever F, fulcrumed at one end on a pin G, secured longitudinally in the draw-head, the said lever extending through a transverse and tapering slot H, formed in the draw-head so as to intersect the opening B. The lever F, preferably, extends to one side of the car, so that the said lever can be conveniently manipulated without. the operator stepping between the cars.
The lever F is adapted to be locked in place by a pin I passing through a longitudinallyextending opening formed in one side of the draw-head and opening at the front of the same. The pin I passes over the lever F when the latter is in a lowermost position, so that an upward movement of the said lever is prevented. The pin I is provided with a down- Serial No. 353,441. (No model.)
wardly-extending arm I', connected with a chain J, secured on the draw-head A, so that the pin I is suspended from the said drawhead when not in use for locking the lever F, but within convenient reach for the operator to lock the said lever when desired.
' The arm I is adapted to pass intoa vertically-extending recess K', leading to the opening K, and formed at or near the front of the draw-head at one side of the opening B. (See Fig. 2.) When'the pin I, with its arm I', is in place on the draw-head, neither the said pin nor its arm projects and therefore formsno obstruction whatever.
The operation is as follows: The pin I being detached from the draw-head, the lever F is free to swing up, so that when a couplinglink C is passed into the opening B the arrowshaped head D or D passes under the said lever F and raises the latter until the link C has passed sufficiently far into the opening B so that the lever F drops onto the front oi' the shoulder E or E', respectively. The operator then inserts the pin I, so that the lever F is locked in place, and the latter locks the coupling-link C in position in the draw-head. (See Figs. 4 and 5.) The car to be coupled to has its pin I removed from the draw-head, so
that when the two cars are now moved toward each other the projecting head D or D of the coupling-lilik passes into the opening B of the opposite draw-head and raises the lever F until the latter drops over the shoulder E or E, after which the pin I is inserted to lock the lever F in place. The oars are then coupled.
When the operator desires to uncouple the cars, the pin I in either ofW the draw-heads is removed, the lever F is raised by inserting pin I under the lever F, or the latter is raised from the side of the car and the latter moved away from the other car, so that the couplinglink is withdrawn from the draw-head.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a caracoupling, the combination of a draw-head having a linkopening and a transverse slot intersectingthe link-opening, a lever pivoted in the slot, and means for locking the lever in position, substantially as dei scribed.
IOO
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of a B, thel opening K, and recess K', of a, headed drawhead having a link-opening and a translink, the transversely-extending lever F, pivverse and tapering slot intersecting the linkoted in the slot, and the angular pin l, havopening, a lever pivoted in the slot and exving one member entering opening K and its 5 tending to one side of the ear, and a pin for other member fitting in the recess K', sub- 15 locking the lever in position, substantially as stantially as herein shown and described.
herein shown and described. HOLIVE-R MEGORDEN.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with Witnesses: a draw-head provided with the link-openin g B, FRANK. M. PIERCE,
[o the transverse slot H, intersecting the opening G. S. COO1ER.
