Be it known that I, JOHN A. BRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Draw-Heads for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to couplers or draw-heads for railway-cars.
In some systems of railways, particularly that in which gravity isused for running or propelling the cars at points or distances on the line of way and horse-power is employed for propelling the cars over the other or re-" maining points or distances on the line to provide a combined gradient and horse-power railway, it is essential to have a draw-head for the cars which admits of coupling one car to another, which draw-head also serves as a bumper, and which admits of having attached to it a pole, single-tree, or analogous device for applying horses to and detaching them from the cars at the intervals whereat they are used for propelling the car.
My invention, therefore, has for its object to provide a combined draw-head and bumper adapted to be coupled to alike meeting drawhead, and also to receive and have coupled to it a pole, single-tree, or like attachment.
My invention, accordingly, consists of the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts comprising a combined bum per,drawhead, and coupler having means for receiving and firmly retaining in position thereon a pole or single-tree attachment for horses, having reference particularly to a draw-head having a front bumping-face, near the top of which is a slot or mouth. having open sides through which passes a coupling-pin for securing the single-tree or pole to the draw-head, a hook or lug upon the top of the draw-head back of said pin for engagement with the link of the coupleddraw-head, said link being pivoted to the draw-head slightly to the rear of said hook orlng and is wide enough to pass up and down outside of the draw-heads when placed in engagement with and disengaged from the hook or log of a meeting draw-head; to a concussion-spring, truss, or brace-rod, and supporting-bracket for the drawhead; and to a Eerial No. 218,516. \Vhile I have described my improved draw head as especially applicable to a defined system of railways, yet I do not limit myself thereto, as it may be used upon cars for street or other railways with equal advantage, and I have therefore inthe drawings shown a form of draw-head especially adapted for street-railway cars.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a draw-head embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a like view of two draw-heads coupled together, one of them partly broken away; Fig. 3, a plan of the same, partly sectional; Fig. 4, an elevation of aslight modification of draw-head support to adapt it for use upon street-railway cars; and Fig. 5, a detail plan of same, partly broken away.
A represents the draw-head, having prcferably a wide curved front face, a, which serves as a bumping end or face, and is preferably in the form ofaplate depending from a top plate, a, which plates are united and'strengthened bya vertical rib, (4 which terminates at its bottom in a screw. or threaded end, a. This plate-and-rib form of draw-head is preferable, as it provides a light, strong, and durable draw-head; but it may be otherwise cast or made, as desired. Above the top plate, a, is a second plate, B, or it is a branch or fork from plate a, to form or provide a slot or open space, b, above plate a. In branch B is an opening, I), through which passes a pin, 0, which also enters a socket or opening, a in rib a or draw-head A.
In the slot or open space I) is inserted the tongue of the pole or single-tree attachment, which rests upon the top of the draw-head and is retained in position by the pin G, which is therefore a coupling-pin only for said pole or single tree attachment and has nothing to do with coupling of two of the similar-described draw-heads together.
Upon the top of plate or fork B, back of pin 0, is a rearwardly-projecting hook or lug, d, and below andslightly to the rear of hook d a link, G, ispivoted or otherwise loosely attached to draw-head A or its stem or rod D. This link G normally assumes a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, and is wide enough to pass up and down outside of the draw- 5 heads, as shown in Fig. 3, as the same is raised or lowered to couple with and uncouple from the hook or lug d on a meeting drawhead, as represented in Fig. 2. This outside link, G, therefore, in conjunction with book IO or lug d, serves as the coupling device for uniting two of the similar-described drawheads.
To retain the coupling-pin G in position to prevent its accidental displacement by jarring 1 5 or other causes,to avoid corresponding detachment of the pole or single-tree attachment, it is provided at its upper end with a loose link, 0, adapted to engage with lug d. Link 0 is of such a length that its rear end clears the hook or lug (1 when the link is raised on its pivotpoint by hand or by a chain, 0, when the pin G is down or in position in the draw-head.
As thelink c is pivoted to pin 0, its normal position or engagement with hook d ismaintained by gravity, so that if pin 0 is, lifted by jarring, bumping, or other accidental cause,or without first raising the link 0, it is drawn toward and engages with hook d to lock the pin and prevent its further elevation out of the 0 draw-head. When coupling t'wo meeting draw-heads, one of the links a is first thrown over to the front of its respective draw-head before the link G 011 the opposite draw-head is raised into engagement with said hook.
(See Fig. 2.) The draw-head stem or rod D passes through suitable openings, h, in the carsills or cross-timbers H, having face-plates h, and through suitable openings, vi, in a rightangle bracket, I, having nipples z" for bolt or 0 screw-fastenings t with the car-timbers, said bracket being more plainly shown in Fig. 6.
Between the vertical end i of bracket I and timber H is a concussion-spring, L, and also a washer or plate, Z, to take the wear off of timber or sill H. The end of stem D, projecting beyond the bracket I, is provided with a suitable cross pin or stud, d, for contact with the end of spring L, which receives the pulling strains as well as those of concussion,
and has a screw or threaded end, d, which is connected to the draw-head end a by a truss or brace, M, securely fixed to said ends by nuts m. This brace strengthens the drawhead, its bumping-face, and stem, so that no part of the same will bend or otherwise be easily impaired when in service.
In applying my improved draw-head to street-railway cars the bracket I is continued out to the front end sill or platform of the car,
and has an upwardly-projecting plate, N,
which passes up in front of and forms a guardplate for that part of the dasher adjacent to the draw-head. To make this guard-plate light, but strong, its front side is provided at intervals with ribs n, as indicated more plainly inFig. 7 and is screwed to the front side and bottom of the sill-piece, as shown in Fig. 4.
This guard-plate and bracket are preferably in one piece. In all other respects the coupler or draw head is constructed as above described.
What I claim is 1. A draw-head having a wide and deep solidbumping-face, a slot or openspace above and back of the bumping-face, a coupling-pin passing through said slot, a hook or lug back of said pin, and an outside link for coupling one draw-head to another, substantially as set forth.
2. A combined draw-head and bumper having slot or open space b above the bumpingface of the draw-head, a coupling-pin passing through said slot or open space, a hook or lug back of said pin, and an outside coupling-link, G, substantially as set forth.
3. A combined draw-head and bumper having a coupling-pin for a pole or single-tree attachment and a coupling devicefor securing two similar draw-heads together, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination,with draw-head A,having slot or open space b, of coupling-pin 0, having pivoted link 0, hook or lug d, and link G, substantially as set forth.
5. The draw-head A, having slot 1), threaded ends a and d, and brace-rod M, substantially as set forth.
6. The draw-head A, having brace-rod, in combination with bracket I and concussionspring L, substantially as set forth.
7. The draw-head A, having brace-rod M, bracket I, having guard or shield N, and spring L, substantially as set forth.
8. In combination with draw-head A, the bracket I, having at its front side a guard or shield, N, provided with ribs 12 on its front side, substantially as set forth.
9. The draw-head A, composed of bumpingplate, a top plate, a, fork B, threaded ends d and a and brace-rod M, substantially as set forth.
