' UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
JOSEPH SILBERNIK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED GALLEY-REST, COPY-HOLDER, AND COPY-GUIDE iaPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,954, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed March 19,1885. Serial No. 159,424. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH SILBERNIK, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined GalleyRests, Copy- Holders, and Copy-Guides, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my improvement, shown in full lines applied to the lower case, and in dotted lines applied to the upper case. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same reversed. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide combined galley-rests, copy-holders, and copyguides constructed in such a manner that they can be readily applied to the lower case to hold a galley when correcting proof, and applied to the upper case for holding copy, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and when in use will not obstruct any of the compartments of the case.
The invention relates to a combined galleyrest, copy-holder, and copy-guide, constructed with a frame provided with metallic plates at the upper ends of the side bars, and bars sliding in staples at the outer sides of the said side bars, whereby the said frame can be used either side up. To the frame are hinged bars, resting upon its cross-bars, connected by a rod and cords, and provided with a long staple attached to the side bar, and a hooked rod sliding upon the long staple and a connecting-cord, whereby the galley-rest can be used as a copy holder and guide, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A represents the lower case, and B the upper case, which cases are supported upon a frame, 0, in the ordinary manner. D are two side bars, which are recessed in their lower edges to make them lighter, and are connected near their ends by two cross-bars, E. The side bars, D, are made of such a length that the lower feet, formed by recessing the edges of the said side bars, will rest against the bottom ledge of the lower case, and the upper feet will rest upon the edge of a crosspartition of the said case. The frame D E is kept from slipping down, when placed upon the case A, by metallic plates F, attached to the outer edges of the upper feet, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The frame D E is made of such a size as to readily support a galley, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, without preventing access to the various compartments of the case.
To the lower sides of the cross-bars E, at one end, are hinged the ends of two bars, G, which are connected near their free ends by a rod, H, attached to them. The bars G are secured in place, when the improvement is used as a galley-rest, by a button, I, pivoted to a cross-bar, E, and turned over the end of a bar, G. The bars G are further connected by cords J, the ends of which are secured to the inner sides of the said bars by eye-screws or other suitable means.
To the side bar, D, at the hinged ends of the bars G, is attached a long staple, K, which passes through an eye in the end ofa rod, L, upon the other end of which is formed a hook to engage with the outer connecting-cord, J, as shown in Figs. 3 and, 4. To the upper crossbar is attached a spring-clamp, M, to take hold of the upper edge of the copy and hold it, the said copy resting upon the rod H and cords J, and being held smooth by the hooked rod L. The hooked rod L can be moved down upon the staples K and cord J, to serve as a guide to direct the eye of the compositor to the part of the copy being used.
With this construction the copy-holder can be swung up, carrying the copy with it, to give access to the compartments of the case.
To the outer sides of the lower ends of the side bars, D, are attached pairs of staples N, through which are passed bars 0, the ends of which are made a little wider than their bodies,
to prevent the said bars from dropping out of the said staples. The bars 0 serve as stops to keep the frame D E in place upon the-case when the said frame is adjusted either side up and adjust themselves in proper position by sliding through the said staples.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the frame D E, of the metallic plates F, the staples N, and the stop-bars O, sliding in the said staples, sub
stantially as herein shown and described, ing hook-rod L, substantially as herein shown whereby the said frame can be used either side and described, whereby the galley-rest can be up, as set forth. a used as a copy holder and guide, as set forth. 2. The combination, with the frame D E, JOSEPH SILBERNIK. 5 having metallic plates F and staples and slid- Witnesses:
ing barsN O, of the hinged bars G, the rod H, J AMES T. GRAHAM,
and cords J, and the long staple K and slid- O. SEDGWICK.
