To all w 7mm t may concern Be it known that l, PETER D. PAULs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Combination Library and Drawing Tables, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to articles of turnii ture, and in particular to a convertible table which isl intended to be used either as a library table, or as a drawing table 'for use by drattsmen, architects, or the like.
The primary object or' the invention is to provide a table of this character which is adapted normally to present the appearance of the ordinary library table and which `may be used in this capacity, but whose top is movably mounted upon the supporting -lraine of the table in such a manner that it may be elevated and tilted to the desired degree by means provided for that purpose for convenient use in drawing and sketching.
A still further object is to provide adjusting means for the table top, which may be manipulated by the expenditure of a miniinuin amount of exertion, and which will serve to secure the top rigidly in adjusted position, but which may be released readily when it is desired to return the top to its normal position.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the frame of the table which may be constructed, as shown, like the usual form ot library table. rlhe upper, body portion of the frame, which is mounted upon the legs 2, includes the side rails 3, the front and rear rails l and 5 respectively, and the bottoni 6. The movable top 7 of the table, which is rectangular in construction, is provided upon its under face with marginally ar 'anged flanges 8, which latter are spaced inwardly from 'the edges ot the top and are adapted normally to rest upon the rails of the body portion oli the 'frame when the table is to be used for library purposes.
The table top is connected with thetrame by means of a` lazy-tongs device, each side portion of which includes the medially pivoted cross bars-9 and `10, which are connected by means of the pivot boltll. rihe lower ends of the bars 9 ofboth sets are pivotally connected with the side rails ,3 oic the body portion ot the table trame inwardly thereof by ineansot thepivot pinsl. The lower ends of both bars 10, however, are connected by means of a transverse rod 13 and are adapted normally to bear upon the longitudinal ledges or tracks 14 provided upon the inner Ylaces of the said side rails B immediately above the bottom 6. The upper ends of the companion bars 9 are connected by means of a transverse rod 15 and are vadapted to bear against the bottom of the table top, inwardly ot its flanges 8. A transversely extending operating shaft 1G is jouinaled in the side portions of the top flanges S adjacent to the 'liront edge of the top and the upper ends of the bars are pivotally connected therewith, inwardly of the said flanges. Flexible nicmbers 17, which are preferaljily in the form of steel straps, are connected with the cross-rod adjacent to the ends thereoi` and extend upwardly over a guide bar 18 which extends transversely beneath the top to the operating shaft, to -whose ends they are connected in such a manner that they may be wound thereon. T he ends of the guide bar 18 are secured to a pair ot strips 19 which extend along the under face of the table top in parallel relation to the side edges of the saine and inwardly of the pivoted bars 9 of the lazy-tongs supporting device. rThe cross-rod 15 therefore is adapted to slide along the under edges of the strips 19 during angular adjustment of the bars 9 and l0. rlhis adjustment of the supporting device may be obtained by operation of the shaft 1G, which is provided upon one endthereof with a crank 90 having a handle 2l by which it may be rotated manually. A ratchet 22 is provided upon the shaft adjacent to the crank for engagement by a releasable pawl 23, which latter is pivotally mount- 10 ed upon the adjacent flange of the top.

These strips are adapted to support the lower ends of the side bars l0 of the top-supporting device when in'position for maintaining the top at a slight inclination for drafting purposes, as shown particularly in Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive and Fig. l2. A cover or second topf25, as it may be termed, is hinged to the rear edge of the main top as at 26. This second top is adapted normally to overlie the main top and f is provided with marginal, depending'flanges 27 which are adapted to embrace the edges of the last-named top. This second top is adapted to rest flat upon they main top when 30 the table is used for library or sketching purposes, as shown in Figs. l to 3 inclusive and 10 and l1, respectively, but is adapted to be raised into a substantially vertical position for use as a holder for drawings, blue prints, or other data which are being followed in the drafting operation. Securing hooks 28 are pivotally mounted upon the front legs of the frame adjacent to the upper ends thereof for engagementwith the eye members 29 carried by the side bars 9 of the top-supporting device when the said bars are vertically disposed to maintain the top in position for sketching, as shown particularly in Fig. 1l.
The front rail of the frame body is provided with a drawer opening 30 for the reception of a removable drawer 3l which is adapted, when closed, to extend between the side bars of the top-supporting device. This drawer is adapted for use in storing drawing appliances and materials.
The different positions and adjustments of the table will now be described. In Figs. l to 3 inclusive, the main top is shown in its horizontal position, resting upon the frame of the table, and the second top or cover is shown in its closedl position wherein it lies flat uponthe main top. The table in this form is adapted for use as an ordinary library table. When it is desired touse the 50 table, however, for drafting or other purposes, with its main top elevated, but still horizontally disposed, the operating crank is V turned in clockwise direction, whereupon the upper ends of the side bars 9 and 10 of the supporting device will be drawn towardeach The Y operation of this device will be describedV other so as to raise the top to the desired elevation wherein it will be locked by the pawl and ratchet device. Owing to the fact that the flexible winding members pass up over the guide bar 18, the leverage will be increased so as to minimize the force required in raising the top. As shown in these figures of drawing, the second, hinged top is swung back to its open position.
When it is desired to incline the main top of the table to a slight degree, in order to accommodate the same to the position of the draftsman using the table, the top is tilted forwardly, after the sidebars 9 and l0 of the supporting device have been ad- S0 justed sufficiently to permit the same to clear the supporting strip 24, and then the said bars are expanded by releasing the pawl from engagement with the ratchet until the lower ends of the bars l() bear upon the said supporting strips'.- hile the top is supported effectively in this inclined position, as shown particularly in Figs. 7 to 9 inclusive, it may be adjusted towardr or away from the operator by manipulation of the crank.
W'hen it is desired to -use the table for sketching purposes, wherein it is essential that the top shall be nearly vertical, the second top 25 is closed upon the main top 95 and the latter is tilted farther so as to bring the side bars 9 into vertical positions, wherein they may be secured by'means of the hooks 28. This position of theV device is shown in Figs. 10 and 1l.
From the foregoing description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, it should be apparent that l have provided a table, which may beused efficiently in various capacities and which'is extremely 105 simple in its construction, so as to be easily adjustable, durable, and inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.
What is claimed is:
l. A table of the class described comprising a frame consisting of supporting legs and top rails connecting the same, a top movably mounted upon the frame, a supporting device for the top including side pairs of medially pivoted bars, Vadjacent ends of corresponding bars of both pairs being pivotally connected with the side rails yofthe frame, the corresponding ends of the other bars being pivotally connected with the top, the oppositev ends of the first-named bars being frictionally engaged with the top, the side rails of the frame being constructed to provide horizontal ledges adapted to support the opposite ends of the last# named bars of both pairs, means bywhich l25- the relatively movable bars of each pair may be adjusted angularly, and short,fhori zontally disposed supporting strips mounted upon the side rails of the frame above the said ledges and in spaced relation to the pivoted ends of the side bars connected With the 'frame for supporting engagement with the free ends oi the other bars.
2. A. table of the class described comprising a frame consisting of supporting legs and top rails connecting the same, a top movably mounted upon the frame, a supporting device for the top including side pairs of medially pivoted bars, adjacent ends of corresponding bars oi both pairs being pivotally connected with the side rails of the frame, the corresponding ends of the other bars being pivotally connected with the top, the opposite ends of the Erst-named bars being frictionally engaged with the top, the side rails of the frame being constructed to provide horizontal ledges adapted to support the opposite ends of the lastnamed bars of both pairs, means by Which the relatively movable bars of each pair may be adjusted angularly, and detachable means for securing the side bars connected With the frame in vertically disposed position.
