Description

S. D. BEUM.
TRUCK. APPLICATION FILED -APR. 27. 191 I.
' Patented Feb. 26, 1918.
sw ns: l
STEPHEN n. nnu vr, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
earner.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. BEUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Truck, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trucks especially designed for use in moving large or cabinet phonographs from place to place, one of the objects of the invention being to provide atruck which can be handled by one man and which can hold a crate containing a phonograph or can engage a phonograph when re moved from a crate without injury to the instruinent.
A further object is to provide a truck of this character which can be adjusted readily to cabinet phonographs of difierent sizes.
1V ith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the truck.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of a portion thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3' of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end portion of the adjustable slide.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference,1 designates the head of the truck which is preferably formed of an elongated strip mounted on supporting wheels 2 which may be connected to the end portions of the strip. Fixedly secured to the middle portion of this head and extending at right angles therefrom is a tongue 3 and obliquely disposed braces 4 are attached to the sides of the tongue and to the end portions of the head. Secured to the front ends of these braces are stop strips 5 having upstanding holding ears 6 at their free ends.
A slide 7, in the form of an elongated strip, rests on and extends across the tongue i 3 and the braces 4 and secured to the middle portion of this slide is a bracket 8 which extends under and is adapted to slide along the tongue 3, thus to hold the slide 7 in position without interfering with its sliding movement. Secured to the back face of the slide Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 216, Jllglllfi. A Application fiie'aii rn 27, 191?. Sarina/164561. i i i 7 at each end thereof is an angular bracket 9 the intermediate portion of which is adapted, when the bracket is in oneposition, to rest on the top of the slide and, when the bracket is in another position, to rest against the end of the slide. One end of the bracket has a pivot pin 10 extending therethrough into the back face of the slide while the other end of the bracket projects outwardly to form a stop ear 11.
A. guide rod 12 is arranged under and parallel with a portion of the tongue 3, this rod having its ends offset as at 13 and secured to the tongue. A handle 14 is loosely mounted upon the rod 12 and is secured to one end of a connecting rod 15 the other end of which is attached to the bracket 8. A grip 16 extends downwardly from the rear or free end portion of the tongue 3, and a brace 17 connects the lower end of this grip to the tongue.
'When it is desired to use this truck for the purpose of transporting a crate, the brackets 9 are swung laterally and downwardly, the truck is raised perpendicularly and the ears 6 are inserted under the crate. The truck can then be used in the same manner as an ordinary hand truck, the crate resting on the slide 7 and the ears 6. Should it be desired to transport a cabinet phonograph, the truck is placed on end against the back of the phonograph and by means of the handle 14, the slide 7 is shifted longitudinally until the brackets 9, which have first been moved to the positions shown in the drawings, are brought into positions with their ears or lugs 11 engaging the lower edge of the back of the phonograph. As soon as this adjustment has been effected the handle 14 is released and the wall of the opening 14 in the handle will bind on the rod 12 and thus prevent the slide 7 and the supported load from moving downwardly while the load is being transported.
It is to be understood that those portions of the truck coming into contact with the load can be provided with protecting strips of felt or the like, one of which has been indicated at 18.
What is claimed is:
A truck including a movably supported body, outstanding load engaging devices thereon, a tongue extending from the body, a slide on the tongue, load engaging devices on the slide, and adjustable into and out of active p sitions,-and.means on the tongue for my own, I have hereto affixed my signature adjustlng the slide toward and from the in the presence of two witnesses. body, said means including a guide rod, in
T eombined'handle and grip slidably mounted STEPHEB BEUM' on the rod 'and a connection between the Witnesses: slide and said handle and grip. W. H. HUTTIE,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as GEO. E. GLEDHILL.
