LEGGIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,630, dated December 15, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J. HOWARD WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pen nsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.

Knit leggins as usually made are shaped or spread at their lower ends to cover the upper part of the shoe, and are secured to the latter by means of a strap passing under the same immediately in front of the heel. Among the objections to this construction are that, in the first place, it is unsightly, and, secondly, in that when the wearer walks on the snow the latter is apt to become forced up between the expanded part of the leggin and the shoe-upper, in which case the heat of the foot melts the snow, and the upper and foot consequently become wet.

The object of my invention is to obviate this annoyance, and at the same time to pr0- duce a leggin having a neater appearance than the ordinary leggins. This I accomplish in the following manner, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which represents a leg gin provided with my improvement as applied in actual use, a part of the lower end being broken away in order to show the elastic band.

A represents the leggin, which is knit in the usual form, ribbed or otherwise, excepting that the expanded portion hereinbefore referred to is omitted. I sew into and around the lower extremity an elastic ring or band, B, of india-rubber or other flexible or elastic material suitable for the purpose, adapted to clamp closely the upper part of the shoe, as shown. The ring or band is of sufficient thickness to catch and hold against the buttons at the upper part of the shoe, and thus prevent displacement. The elasticity of this band is such as to allow the leggin to be drawn over the shoe, and afterward to clamp closely the upper part of the same around the ankle.

It is obvious that the lower part of the leggin not only presents a neat and trim appearance, but prevents the snow from getting between it and the shoe.

In buttonshoes, such as that shown in the drawing, the band B is allowed to pass around between two of the buttons, which aids in retaining the leggin in place, and thus prevents it from working up on the shoe.

I am aware that knit leggins having elastics at the top and knee and knit leggins having an elastic band or strap at the top are old, and such I do not claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a knit leggin formed to terminate at the ankle of the wearer, and provided at its lower end with a circular elastic band of such thickness as to engage the buttons or fastenings at the upper part of the shoe of the wearer, and thus be held against displacement, substantially as specified.
