J. & P. SCOTT.
SHOVEL PLOW.
(No Model.)
No. 332,563. Patented Dec. 15,1885

venioj UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES SCOTT AND PATRICK SCOTT, OF BROOKSVILLE, ALABAMA.
SHOVEL-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,563, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed July 30, 1885. Serial No. 173,040. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES Soorr and PATRICK Scorr, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooksville, in the county of Blunt and State of Alabama, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Shovel-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
Our improvement relates to shovel-plows used with interchangeable shovels carried by separate standards, one in advance of the other; and our improvement consists in combining with the beam having an eyebolt and a bent standard-arm having an end hook and a horizontal side arm braced together at the angle, a saddle-clip placed upon said beam, whereby to adjustably clamp and brace the said hooked arm and its standard to both sides and to the bottom of the beam, making a strong construction for securing the hooked standard-arm to the beam by clamping and bracing its side arm to the bottom and to each side of the beam. By this construction the bent standardarm turns upon its hook end to adjust it toward and from the plowbeam, and the clip is moved lengthwise of the beam to conform to the are described by the lateral adjustment of the side arm, and the pressure upon the shovel-standard is borne by its hook at one end and by its braced side arm at the other end.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents our improved shovelplow in perspective; Fig. 2, a top view of the same; Fig. 3, the front shovel-standard and its saddle clip adjustable fastening; Fig. 4, the rear shovel-standard; Fig. 5, a front view of the front shovel-standard and its saddleclip adjustable fastening.
The front standard, a, is made of strapiron, forming a slot, 2), within which to secure the kind of shovel to suit the work. The outer side of the standard is curved into a short beam, 0, which terminates in a hook, d, hooking into an eyebolt, e, secured to the side of the main beam f near its front end, while the other or inner side of the standard-strap terminates in a side arm or brace, g, standing horizontally from the standard at right angles thereto. This side arm or brace is clipped to the under side of the standard by a saddleclip, h, constructed to straddle the beam from the top and to receive through its open sides 2' z the standard side arm or brace and clamp it to the under side of the main beam by a screw, j, passing through the top of the saddle and bearing upon the top of the beam. By loosening the clamp-screw the front standard can be swung upon its hook (I nearer to or farther from the main beam, the side arm or brace sliding in the open ends of the saddle-clip. This screw firmly binds the clip to the standard-arm and the latter to the under side of the main beam. At the bend of the standard-brace a block, 70, is secured by a screw, s, between the straps, to bind them together for strength and make the standard practically solid at the point receiving the greatest strain while plowing. The rear standard, Z, is bolted by one of its strap sides to the under side of the main beam, while its other side is curved into a short beam, m, which terminates in a hook, n, which fastens in an eyebolt, r, secured to the main beam in rear of the saddle-clip. This makes a very cheap and strong construction of shovel-plow, suited for different kinds of work. The front shovel attachment is easily removed by unclamping the saddle-clip, drawing the standard-arm from it, and unlocking the staudard-beam from its eyebolt-fastening.
We claim The combination of the plow-beam f, having the fixed eyebolt c, with the standard-arm having the hook end d and the side arm, 9, braced to the standard-arm by the block it at the angle of said side arm, the clip-binder h, and the clamp-screw j, whereby the said hook standard-arm is braced to the side arm and the latter to the beam at its bottom and at its sides, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
