LORENZO D. MONROE AND GEORGE W. WIGGINS, OF MORGAN, GEORGIA.
CULTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,341, dated November 10, 1885;
Application filed April 16, 1885. Serial No. 162,456. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, LORENZO Dow lVION- ROE and GEORGE W. WIGGINs, citizens of the United States, residing in Morgan, in the county of Calhoun and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the cultivator, looking downward from above. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with one of the cultivator-beams removed. Fig. 3 is an end view showing how the side cultivator-beams are attached to the center cultivatorbeam.
This invention relates to cultivators; and it consists in the detailed construction of the parts hereinafter described, by which the arms which carry the cultivator-blades are made adjustable upon any part of the said cultivator-beams, and also adjustable at any angle thereto. This invention further consists in the combination, with a central cultivator-beam, of side beams, also carrying ad'- justable arms, and of an adjustable draftbar, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is a cultivator-beam, provided with the handles a for guiding it.
B is an arm for carrying the cultivatorblade, provided with bolts b,by which the sides of arm B may be drawn together and caused to clip the beam A tightly between them.
Ois a foot pivoted upon the upper bolt 7), and provided with projections 0 upon the under surface of it, which projections, when the block or foot is clamped on the beam, project thereinto, forming indentations or sockets, such as shown at a, by means of which construction the foot is positively held from slipping, as will be understood.
I) is a brace pivoted by the pin d to the arm B, and extending backward therefrom.
E is a clip bent over two sides of the beam A. One end of this clip is provided with a hole, through which the bolt d passes and unites it to the brace D. The other end of clip E has a square hole, 6, in it, through which the end of brace D passes.
F is the draft-bar, provided at one end with the rams-horn hook f, by which it may be attached to the whiffietree direct without using any clevis. The other end of draft-bar F is pivoted to the angle-barf, which is attached to the beam A by the boltf G are the side beams of the cultivator. Each of these is provided with an adjustable arm, B, for carrying a cultivator-blade similar to that used on the center beam, A. Each end of the side beams, G, is provided with an angle-bar, 9, attached to it by suitable bolts, 9. The bent ends of these angle-bars overlap, so that the said beams may be arranged to work a various distance apart.
H are bolts, provided with nuts, and with a clip-plate, h. These bolts pass through the center beam, A, and clamp the angle-bars g of the side beams firmly to it when screwed up.
I is a clip for clamping the draft-bar F to the anglebars g. The draft-bar can be arranged to work on either side of the center beam, A, and can be adjusted to work at any distance from it by sliding it along the anglebars 9 before tightening the clip I.
\Vhen desired, the center beam can be used without either of the side beams, and only one cultivator-blade employed. In this case the draft-bar is clipped to the center beam, so as to pull central. In like manner either or both of the side beams can be used in combination with the center beam, and two or three cultivatorbeams employed, the draft'bar being clipped to the angle-bars to suit them, as before described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. The combination, with the main beam and the side beams, adj ustably and removably secured thereto, of an arm extended laterally from the main beam, and a draft-bar pivoted at one end to said lateral bar, and having its other end projected in advance of the forward point of connection of the main and side beams and adjustable laterally, and a clamp whereby said draft-bar maybe held at any desired point of adjustment, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the beam, the stand ICO ard having arms lapped on opposite sidesof the beam, afoot-block pivoted between said arms and having its under side provided with projections or studs adapted to engage the beam, a bolt connecting the arms of thestandard close to the beam and on the side thereof opposite the foot-block, a brace pivoted at one end to the standard, and a fastening whereby the other end of the brace may be held adjustably to the beam, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of the main beam, the side-beam arms rigidly connected at one end to the side beams and extended inwardly and lapping one upon the other against the main beam, and clips secured to the center beam and embracing the lapped portion of the arms of the opposite side beams, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the beam, the branched standard, a foot-block pivoted between its ends and having studs or projections, a bolt, 12, the brace D, an angle-clip having one arm lapped alongside the beam and the other extended across the same, and providedvwith an opening fitted over the end of the brace D, and a bolt extending under the beam connecting the side arm of the clip and the brace. substantially as set forth.
