Be it known that I, 'IHoMns MEIKLE, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and 5 useful Improvements in Gultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description of the saine, having reference to the accompanying drawings, -in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my coupling detached from the side bar. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of J[he same, showing the clamp in action.
The object of my inventionis to provide an efficient and cheap mode of adjusting the cultivator-shovels both as Ito elevation. and angle, not subject to derangement by any lack of intelligence on the part of attendants,- and it relates to that class of adjustable hoes which are provided with clamping devices of some sort attached tothe beam to seize and hold the shanks of the hoes.
I am aware that cultivator-hoes have been made heretofore with cylindrical shanks, and that clamps have been placed upon the beams to receive and hold said shanks, and that such clamps have been made in considerable variety. Therefore I do not propose to broadly claim herein that mode of securing and holding the hoe-Shanks; but I am not aware that any one has heretofore constructed for a cultivator-hoe with a cylindrical shank a clamping- Y coupling pivoted to the beam or drag-bar with the clamp in the line of draft, so that all side strains are avoided. y j
A is my drag bar or beam, preferably made from two flat bars of metal. beam is connected to the clevis or draft-frame in some proper way, and there may be two or more of said beams, as desired. Ordinary or suitable handles are also provided for the management of thecultivator while in use.
At the rear end of the beam is my coupling B, preferably made of malleable iron,withV a central web and marginal ribs for Strength transversely. About'midway its length it has a bolt-hole for the coupling or pivot bolt d, which passes through both .parts of the beam and through the plate B, between them.
At the front the Atits forward end the plate B is provided with a transverse slot or notch, e, for the clamp-bolt f, whereby when the plate B has been adjusted as to angle it is clamped to tlie beam and fixed in position. At the rear end of the plate B there is a vertical socket, g, to receive the-cylindrical shank H of the cultivator-hoe I and allow it to be turned to set said hoe at any angle tothe line of advance, or to slip up or down to set said hoe at any desired vertical distance below the beam. The socket g is divided transversely by the notch la, in which I place the eye of the eyebolt L, so that the shank H passes through said eye. The screw-shank of said eyebolt passes through the saddle M, which rests against the outside of the socket g and spans the notch 7c, and a nut, n, upon theontside of said saddle, when tightened up, serves to clamp the shank H fast in the socket y.
The saddle M may be made iutegralwith the socket g; but I have preferred to make it separate therefrom.
By separating the beam in two parts longitudinally, and by placing the socket g in the end of the coupling B directly in line with the be'ain and the shank H of the hoe, the draftstrains are transmitted in direct lines, and all torsional or side strains are avoided. This is a mattei' of importance, because the relief` is felt in every part, and the beam and coupling B may both be made with less Weight than heretofore, and therefore more easily and cheaply.
Having described my invention, I claiml. In combination with the cultivator-beam A, the coupling B, provided at its front end with the slot or notch e, and at its rear end with the socket g, and clamp to hold the shank H in position as adj usted, substantially as set forth. l
