A. H. BENNETT.
PLOW.
No. 391,576. Patented Oct. 23, 1888.
ABNER HILL BENNETT, OF DECATUR,
TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JESSE H. GUINN, OF SAME PLAOE. i
PLOW.
SPBC'IFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 391,575. dated October 23, 1888.
Serial No. 274.691. (No model.)
T all wtom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER HILL BENNET'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at De catur, in the county of Meigs and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in plows; and it consists in the construction and ro novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plow embodying` the invention. Fig. [5 2 is a plan view of the same with the handles detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the shorter and adjustable plow-beam detached.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A des` ignates the main plow-beanr, composed of the front woodeu part, B, having the opposite transverse Shoulders b b across its rear portion, and the deeper transverse Shoulders b' b' near its rear end, and the metal part O, composed of the curved standard c at its rear, the solid portion c' adjoining the said standard,
and the front portion, c'z, composed of the upper and lower plates 03 03, the front parts of which are bent to conform to the Shoulders b b'. The said plates are connected to the wooden part by Vertical bolts and nuts, as shown, with
their ends ilush with the upper and lower surfaces thereof.
D D are the handles connected, as usual, below their upper ends by a bar, and with their lower ends bound tightly together bypbolts that pass through them and the side platcs, d d. The said plates lie against the outer side of the handle and the sides of the solid metal portion c' of the plow-beam, to which they are 40 bolted firmly, their ends being bent under and against the plow-beam.
The metal plates 03 are provided with the series of registering openngs e e, as shown, to receive the Vertical adjusting-pin E.
F is the shorter adj ustable plow-beam,which is of metal and has its rear portion formed into the curved standard f, similar to the standard c of the main beam, and its front end, bent at right angles inward, and reduced in thickness to pass snugly between the plates 03. The said end has a perforation which can be made to register with any-one of the pairs of openings c, and held thereto by the pin E.
The standards c andf have seoured to them similar blades or shares G G', respectively.
I'I is a link-plate provided with an elongatcd lougitudinal slot, h,and pivoted at one end upon the main plow-beam, just in rear of the handles, and I is a bolt-rod rising vertically from a proper point of the adjustable pl.o\v-beam. The said bolt-rod passes through the slot IL, and is engaged thereabove by a nut, i, below which is an ordinary metal washer.
It is obvious that by means of the openings e and pin E the beam F can be adjusted longitudinally with reference to the main beam, and by means of the slotted link, bolt, rod, and nut the adj ustable beam can be set at different angles on the main beam. Thus the share G can be set immediately behind the share G to 7G deepen the furrow in subsoil plowing, or it can be set opposite thereto to cover rows of corn, or may be behind, and with its beam forming' an angle with the main beam.
If desired, the adjustable beam may be detached, and the machine used as a single plow.
Having (lesc-ribed my invention, I claini- In a plow, the combination, with the main beam and the standard at the rear end thereof, of the short'er plowebeam adjustable both longitudinally and angularly with relation to the main beam, and the standard at the rear end of the shorter beam, which, by means of said shorter beam, can bc set either in rear of the mainbeam standard or opposite to and on one side thereof, snbstantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' as m y own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABNER HILL BENNETT.
