Description

(No Model.) 7 v R. 0. McGINNIS;
, PLOW. v Patented July 19, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
ROBERT C. MGGINNIS, OF CHARLOTTE, NORTH OAROLlN A.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,6d2, dated July 19, 1881.
7 Application filed April 16, 1881. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. a citizen of the United States, residing atGhar' lotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the sam e, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of cultivators which are composed of a-pair'of parallel beams connected together by screwrods or other devices for permitting said beams to be brought closer together or separated from each other, as may be desired.
The invention consists in a cultivator comprising a pair of parallel beams of unequal length which are adjustably connected to each other by means of screw-bolts and nuts, and are each provided with an ordinary clevis, through which is passed a split or lap ring for connecting the same. Shovel or plow standards attached to the rear ends of the beams are connected at their upper ends with handlerounds or connecting-bars which are provided with slots for receiving screw-bolts passed through said standards, so as to .permit the MoGINNYs,
beams and standards to be adjustedlaterally .by turning the nuts of the connecting screwrods.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is front perspective view of a parallel cultivator constructed according to the-present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
The lettersAB designate two parallel beams of unequal length, which are provided at their front ends with an ordinary clevis, G. The rear ends of the beams are generally provided with tenons which fit into ,mortises made in the plow or shovel standards D. These standards extend above the beams, and the standard attached to the longest beam is connected at its upper end with a handle-round or transverse bar, E. The standard attached to the shorter beam is also connected with a similar round or bar, F, which,in connection with the aforesaid roundE, serves to connect and support the two handles G. Thesehandles are attached to the outer sides of the beams by staples or other suitable means. are adjustably connected together by means of transverse screw-bolts H, which are provided with end nuts, I, and adjustable nuts J, bearing against the inner sides of the beams. A split or lap ring, K, of any preferred form, is passed through the clevises G of the beams, for connecting the same. This lap or connecting ring also serves as a means for attaching the draft to the cultivator.
In order to permit the beams to be adjusted laterally without changing the position of the handles, I provide the shovel standards with bolts L, which pass through slots M, made in the handle connecting rounds or bars E F. The nuts N, applied to said screw-bolt L, can be loosened to permit said adjustment to take place, an d when tightened all play of the standards on the handle connecting-rounds is effectually prevented.
By connecting the beams through the medium of the clevises and lap or draft ring the parallel position of the beams can always be maintained, whetherthelatterbebroughtcloser together or separated from each other. The presence of the two slotted handle connecting rounds or bars will not only serve to effect a firmconnection between said handles, but they also effectually support the shovel-standards, and enable the latter to be adjusted on said rounds in asimple and expeditious manner withont detaching any of the parts.
What I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the handle-connecting rounds or bars E F, having slots M, the bandles G, standards D, and bolts and nuts L N, with the parallel beams A B, of unequal length, and means for adjusting said beams laterally, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
R. G. MGGINNIS.
