IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,956, dated October 13, 1874; application filed August 28, 1874.
To all whom rt may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL JONES, of Lincoln, in the county of Logan and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cultivator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my cultivator. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same through the line 00 .90, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through the line y y, Fig. 1.
A represents a metallic circle, having upward-projecting flanges at around both the inner and outer circumference. This circle is bent across the center, forming about, or a little less than, a right angle on each side. To each of these angles a short axle, b, is secured by means of a clamp, B, which consists simply of a metal bar having its ends turned downward at right angles, and said ends perforated for the passage of the axle. The clamp B is placed over the circle A at the angle, the axle I) passed through the ends of the clamp under the circle, and a set-screw, d, passed from the top through the center of the clamp, and through the angle of the circle against the axle, thus securing the axle firmly to the circle. Outside of each clamp 13 on the axles D are placed the driving-wheels O O. The two halves of the circle A are bent or curved, as shown in Fig. 2, and to the front half thereof is bolted or otherwise firmly secured the split tongue D, and the rear end of said tongue is connected to the rear half of the circle by an angular brace, e. The bolts 00, which fasten this brace to the circle A, pass through a crossbar, E, on top of this part of the circle, and on the upper ends of the bolts is placed a bar, 3 after which the nuts 2 2 are screwed on. H is the drivers seat, attached to a bar, f, which is inserted between the cross-bar E and bar y .and held by the nuts 2 zthereon. By this means the seat may be moved forward or backward, as desired, so as to balance the machine according to the weight of the driver. On each axle d is placed a sleeve, h, provided on one side with a longitudinal flange, i, which is perforated with a series of holes, as shown in Fig.- 1, for the attachment of a coupling, Gr. This coupling is formed of a vertical plate with a vertical flange, p, 011 each side extending toward the rear, and on the front side of the coupling are two horizontal ears, 8 s, to fitover the flanged on the sleeve h and be pivoted thereto by a suitable bolt. I I represent the plow-beams, which are fastened between the vertical flanges p on the couplings G. The front ends of the plow-beams may be fastened high or low in the couplings, as desired, there being for that purpose a series of holes made in the flanges p p. The plow-beams can thus be turned to either side by the pivot between the ears 8 s and flanges i, and moved up and down by the sleeves h turning on the axles cl. Each plow-beam I is provided with one or two plow-standards, J, each having at its lower end a plow-blade, K, and braced by a brace, k, to the beam in the usual manner. The braces 70 are provided with several holes, so as to be moved up and down as required to adjust the plows. The rear ends of each pair of plow-beams are connected by means of a bar or brace, L, the ends of which are slotted and held to the plow-beams by means of bolts 22 v. By this means the rear ends of the plow-beams may be held firmly at any distance apart to correspond with their front ends. Whentwo plow-standards are used on each plow-beam the adjustable connecting bar or brace L may be made of metal; but if only one on each side is used, then this bar should be made of wood, of sufficient thickness and strength to receive another plow-standard, J, with a large shovelplow, K, on its lower end. This standard is connected by chains w w with both plowbeams, one on each side, as shown on the right side in Fig. 1.
This cultivator is intended to be used either as a riding or walking cultivator, there being handles M attached to the rear end of each of the inner plow-beams. The machine straddles one row and cultivates two rows. The large shovel K is used for laying by corn.
I When going to and from the field the plowbeanns are held elevated by means of hooks a on the plow-beams, and staples b on the rear side of the beam E. On this beam are also other staples, (1, each of which is to have a roller, 0, to run on the staple from side to side. The plow-beams are to be held by chains attached to hooks depending from the frames of the rollers e.
I? P are the handles attached to the inner plow-beams, and adjusted at any angle desired by means of perforated braces f The handles are connected by means of bars R R, which are loosely attached to the handles, and their inner ends slotted and united by a bolt, 1'. By this means the handles can be adjusted at any distance apart to correspond with the adjustment of the front ends of the plow-beams.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the flanged bent circle A, clamp B, axle b, and set-screw d, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the two short axles b I), each having a wheel, 0, the sleeves h h, one on each side of each Wheel, the perforated flanges 41 71, connected to said sleeves, and the couplings G, with perforated flanges p on the ends of the plow-beams, all substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the two axles b b and wheels 0 O, the sleeves h h on each side of each wheel, and provided with perforated flanges '6 i, the four plow-beams I I I I, slotted cross-bars L L, handles 1? P, and the slotted connecting-bars R R for lateral adjustment, all substantially as set forth.
