UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOPE.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332.454, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed November 19, 1884. Serial No. 148,311.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Envelope, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved combination check-envelope for holding money and other valuables left for safe-keeping with hotel clerks or other parties, and which envelope insures its delivery to the proper party, and also serves as a receipt for the person with whom it was deposited.
The invention consists in an envelope having two checks produced on its flap, and having gum lines on the back of the flap, all as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a face view of my improved combination check-envelope, the same being opened. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a face view of the same, one check being torn off.
The envelope A is; provided with the flaps a, of the usual construction, and with the flap B, on the inner surface of which a gum line, C, is produced parallel with the longitudinal edge a short distance from the inner or fixed edge. A gum line, D, is produced on the inner surface of the flap at the left-hand end. A line, E, of perforations is produced below the gum line (3, and a transverse line, F, of perforations is produced on the middle of the flap. On the outer surface of the flap B two checkblanks, G G, are printed, both being alike and provided with the name of the hotel, a

number, a space for the name of the depositor, and other information.
The envelope is used in the following man ner: The money or other valuable matter is placed into the envelope, the gum lines 0 and D are moistened, and the flap B pressed upon the flaps a, thus closing and sealing the euvelope. The owner of the articles writes his name on the check G, and the blank check G is delivered to the owner. The check G is held on the flap B, and is fastened on the en velope by the gum line D. XVhen the owner wants to redeem his articles he delivers his check G and writes his name on it, or, if he has lost his check, he writes his name on another piece of paper and hands it to the clerk. If the signatures on the checks G G agree, the clerk tears off the check G and retains it with the check G as a receipt. The envelope A, which is still sealed, is then handed to the owner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An envelope having two checks produced on its flap, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. An envelope having two checks produced on its flap, and having a gum line produced on the back of the flap above the checks, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. An envelope having two checks produced on its flap, and a gum line on the back of the flap above the checks and a gum line at one end, substantially as herein shown and de-' scribed.
SAMUEL H. SMITH.
