COMBINATION STATEMENT AND ENvELoP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J' uly 17, 1906.
Application filed November 6.1905. Serial No. 286.149.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. DEwEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Statement and Envelop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combination statement and envelop; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination Of arts, as will be fulry hereinafter described and) claimed.
. he object of my invention is to 'construct out of a single sheet of material a statement,
letter-head, bill-head, or other material for correspondence in combination with an envelop.
A further object of my invention is to construct a device in such a manner that the contents or writing is com letely hidden from View whenproperl fol ed and formed into an envelop, the addyiess of the statement actingI' also as the address for the envelop.
n the drawings, Figure 1 is a blank showing my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a view showin the first step of folding. Fig. 3 is a view sowing the second step of olding. Fig. 4 is a view showing the third step of lfoldin Fi 5 is a view showing the rear side o the evice folded and in the form of an envelop ready for mailing. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the device when olded and in the act of being formed into an envelop and for sealing the same. Fi 7 is a perspective view of a modified form', s owing the sealing-lap and the address-aperture in a different location. l
Referring to the drawings in detail, 8 indicates a sheet of pa er provided with perforations 9 and 10. he spaces formed by the perforations 9 and 10 will be referred to by the numerals 11, 12, and 13. The space 11 is provided with the ordinary ruling 14, the lines for addressing 15, and the name of the iirm 16. On the lines 15 are placed the name v and address of the customer to which the statement, letter, or bill is to be sent. On the space 12 is formed a 'fla 17, which is cut out of the material on the `nes indicated by the numeral 18. On this flap is imprinted the name of the firm, which acts as the return notice when the envelop is sealed. The line 19 indicates the point on which the iap is secured and also where the blank is to be folded. The line 2O indicates the point on which the blank is also to be folded. In folding the blank after the contents has been written in the space 11 the sheet is folded on the line 9 and assumes the position as shown in Fi. 2. The next step is to fold the ed e forme in the space 13 on the line 10, which will then assume the appearance as shown in Fig. 8. The upper edge is then folded on the line 19, which appears as shown in Fig. 4. The lower edge is then folded upwardly on the line 2O and forms the envelop as shown in Fig. 5. The flap 17 is then folded over the edge and gummed to the rear side 21. When the device has been folded as described, the name and the address written on the lines 15 can be seen through the opening 22, formed by the bending of the iiap 17, and to the upper right-hand corner is placed the stamp 23. To open a device of this character, the party receiving the letter cuts the envelop at the point indicated by the numeral 24. The sta-tement portion of the device is then torn from the remaining portion on the line 9, and the same can be filed for future reference.
By referring to Fig. 7 I show a modified form, that of placing the iiap and opening in the center, which is done by a different mode of folding. A device of this character `is simple in construction and being formed out of a sheet of paper so that it has no projectin laps or edges can be readily blocked an formed without the waste of material. The devices at present on the market are so formed that by cutting the same from a sheet of paper considerable waste is necessary, and therefore expensive.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is*- In a combined envelop and letter-sheet having a plurality of folding sections, a section having a space adapted to receive Written matter and an-address, an adjoining section having an opening formed by cutting a flap therefrom, said opening, when the sec- IOO tions are folded to ether, adapted to overlie In testimonyvwhereof I halve signed my the s ace on the rst section for receiving name to this specification in presence of tWo an a dress, the edge of one of said sections subscribing Witnesses.
being adapted, when the article is folded, to ARTHUR B. DEWES. lie at the base of said iap whereby the Hap Witnesses: may be turned back upon the section and ALFRED A. EIoKs, sealed thereto. W. C. STEIN.
