SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,310, dated December l5l 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WARS HOAR, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk 5 and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Detachable Pocket and Protector for Railway- Conductors Coats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in Which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my detachable pocket and protector. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of the same, showing the fastening-pins by means of which it is secured to the coat. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the pocket and adjacent portion of a coat having my improved detachable pocket and protector applied thereto. Fig. 4 is an enlarged View of one of the fastening-pins and its plate. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the hook by which the lower edge of the protector is secured to the coat.

Coatsworn by railway-conductors, who have frequent occasion to put their hands in their pockets in making change and taking tickets, are often provided with leather patches permanently stitched to the garment immediately above the pockets, to protect the cloth from wear at these points. These patches are, however, exceedingly objectionable, as they disgure the garment and render it undesirable for wear, except When the conductor is on duty, thereby necessitating the use of a separate coat for ordinary Wear, and often involving additional and unnecessary outlay.

My invention has for its object to overcome this difficulty and to provide for railway-conductors coats a strong and serviceable detachable pocket adapted to t within the ordinary pocket of the coat, and having an upwardlyextending guard or shield which covers and protects that portion of the coat immediately above the pocket, the said guard or protector being provided, if desired, with one or more smaller pockets, and having at suitable points around its edges pins or other suitable fastening devices for securing it to the garment, which construction admits of the pocket and guard being readily removed together when the conductor is relieved from duty, leaving the coat in suitable condition for ordinary wear.

In the said drawings, A, Fig. 3, represents a portion of a coat, and B an ordinary side pocket formed in the same.

C represents my detachable pocket, which is adapted to be placed within the coat-pocket B, and has secured to its top an upwardlyextending shield or protector, D, having an opening, b, forming the mouth or entrance of the pocket. The protector D, which is provided with a lining, c, is of the form shown, and covers that portion of the coat immediately above the pocket B, which is usually exposed to the greatest wear. To the inner side of the protector are riveted at suitable points around the edges, preferably at the upper end, and on each side at the lower corners, as shown, metal plates c, which are provided with springpins f, the points of which t under shields g, and are of similar construction to those used for jewelry and safety pins. These pins f are adapted to pass through the cloth of the coat, and serve to secure the protector D iirxnly in place, and admit of its being readily detached, when desired, and at the center of the lower edge of the protector, on the inner side, is a sharp-pointed hook, h, which catches into the cloth of the coat at this point and holds the pocket C down against any tendency to be drawn upward out of the coat-pocket B by the friction of the hand as it is withdrawn from the pocket O.

The pocket C and protector D are preferably made of leather, as it will best resist the wear of the hands; but they may be made of some other suitable strong material, if desired, and, instead of the pins f, any other suitable fastening devices may be employed which will admit of the ready application of the combined pocket and protector to the coat, and of its being quickly detached therefrom without injuring or defacing the same.

The protector D may, if desired, be provided above the main pocket-opening b with one or more smaller pockets for containing money or tickets, one such pocket being shown at G, and it will be `seen that the large and small pockets, together with the protector, being all connected and forming a single article, can be removed simultaneously from the coat or attached thereto at a single operation, and require but a single set of fastening devices.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a pocket, substantially in the manner and for zcrk the street or elsewhere, which Will be found a great convenience and avoid much unnecessary expense.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination,with a detachable pock- V i et adapted to fit Within an ordinary coat-pocket, of an upwardly-extending shield or protector attached to said detachable pocket, and provided with one or more smaller pockets, and having suitable fastening devices for securing it to the coat above and around the the purpose described.
