PLOW-STOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,225, dated December 15, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THADDEUS W. BOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PlowStocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple and strong wooden plow-stock which will present no projecting brace for the lodgment of weeds and other refuse.

The invention will be hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved plow-stock, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my plow-stock furnished with a metal standard to provide means of attachment for the point, mold-board, and landside of a turnplow. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same.

Like letters refer to like parts in the figures. In the drawings, A represents the standard, and A the handles. These parts are constructed of one piece of wood having one end split lengthwise. This standard may be cut away at its lower end to form a shoulder, a, for the upper edge of a shovel to rest against, and said shovel is held in position by the screw-bolt a, passing therethrough, being provided with a nut, a, to retain it. The standard A is split or sawed lengthwise in two parts from its upper end to and beyond its middle,

where a mortise is made to receive the tenon on one end of the beam B. The two parts which form the handles are sprung apart and held in that position by the brace-rod A in the upper portion thereof. In the lower end of the handles A, a little above the solid portion of the standard, a screw-bolt, A is inserted transversely therethrough, and a nut secured upon it, to hold those ends together and prevent any further splitting of the stand ard. The beam B is provided at one end With a tenon, B, which fits in a mortise, A, that extends about half-way into the standard A. The wood in bottom of said mortise prevents any unnecessary weakening of the plowstock, and forms a support for the tenon at the end of the beam. The standard and beam are united together by means of the L- shaped brace-bolt G. Said brace is composed of a single rod bent at right angles about the middle of its length and screw-threaded at both ends. One end of the brace 0 passes vertically through a perforation, c, in the beam B, and is secured in position by a washer and nut, c. The other end passes horizontally under the beam B, and through a perforation, a in the standard a little below the beam B and the mortise A, to obtain a solid bearing for the washer and nut O at the back of the standard.

My plow-stock may be furnished with a metal standard, D, to provide means of attachment for the point, Inold-board, and landside of a turn-plow. To secure this standard to the plow stock and beam this standard is provided with a pocket, d, to receive the lower end of the plow-stock, and lugs d, to rest against the top and bottom of the beam. To retain the parts rigidly connected a bolt, 6, is used. This bolt has a hooked head to engage with the horizontal portion of the L-bolt C. It passes through the standard D, and has a nut upon its extremity to bear against the face of the standard. The usual form of clevis is attached to the forward part of the beam B.

I am aware that curved braces and jointed bolts have been used to connect the beam to the standard; but I consider the first as objectionable on account of the weeds and trash collecting thereon, and the second as not possessing enough rigidity, and do not claim either of them.

Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a plow-stock, the wooden standard A, having its upper end split or sawed longitudinally to form handles A, in combination with the beam B and the L-shaped bolt 0, screwthreaded at both ends, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the mortised wood standard A, having handles A formed integral therewith, and the beam B,with the metal standard D, having a pocket, d, to receive the end of the standard A, and lugs d and a moldboard seat, d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
