SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,930, dated December 8, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, LEwIs E. WILLIAMs, of South Deerfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, and FRANCIS J.

5 MILLEA, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State aforesaid, have jointly invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding and Turning Sheet-Music, of which the following is a specification, ref- IO erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts.

Figure 1 is a view of the holder and turner, having a portion of the holding-jaws broken away. Fig. 2 is a view of the device with a sheet of music in position for use. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the locking and releasing mechanism. Fig. 4 is a side view of the device, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of one of Heretofore music leaf turners have been complicated, expensive, and easily gotten out of repair.

The object of our invention is to provide a g 5 simple, cheap, and easily operative device which shall be free from the objectionable fea tures found in those heretofore made, and we accomplish this by the construction herein shown. The frame is preferably constructed of two parts, d and b, of wood, with the wires 0 c, as shown in the drawings.

The holding device consists of two pieces, a a, hinged or fixed to the part 1). One of these pieces, a, is adapted to be made adjustable, and will open to allow the insertion of the music between the jaws or two parts a. We prefer to hinge one of the parts a to the part b, and to draw the jaws together with a spiral spring, 2. The fingers Z are of the shape shown in Fig. 5, the end 6 being bent to enter the part b, and being held in position at m by a staple or other suitable means. The fingers being placed in position with the leaf-clasp a turned to the left, the portion 0 being then 4 5 rigidly fastened in place, the tendency will be, if the finger be turned from that position, to return to it, so that when the fingers are all turned to the right and held, each will, when (No model.)

released, return to its first position on the left, and the leaf being held in the clasp will be carried with it. The number of fingers may of course be increased as may be desired.

The mechanism for holding the fingers to the right consists of a part, h, having the bolt p and spring or catch 8. The opening between the part 15 and h is just sufficient to receive the finger and permit it to move freely. \Vhen the fingers are all in place, the outer one will bear against the catch upon the end of spring 8, and when it is desired to release it a downward pressure of the key j will raise the bolt 19, carrying its upper end between the two outer fingers, and as it moves upward will raise the spring 5, and thus release the finger which was held by it, which, escaping, will turn to the left and carry with it the leaf held in the clasp. Upon the pressure being removed from the key, it will be, by the action of the spring r, returned to its first position, allowing the spring-catch s to return to its place, and all of the fingers will move forward until the outer one bears against the catch, and will there remain until the operation be repeated. Thus the fingers will be released separately by a positive action, which effectually prevents more than one escaping at the same time. The guides or serve to hold the finger in the right position while moving from one side to the other.

We are aware that a Inusic-leaf turner has 80 heretofore been made with the center piece grooved on its rear side, and spring-rods secured in the groove, with their angular clamping-arms set to clamp and turn the leaves of the music.

Having therefore described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the frame (Z t, the clamps a a, one of which is hinged to the 0 standard of the frame and connected to the other clamp by contractile springs i at the ends thereof, the angular turning-bars Z, having their stems secured in the frame-standard, and the holding and releasing means, consisting of the body 71/, the part It, spring-catch s,

2. In combination, the frame consisting of the cross-piece (1, provided with guiding-bars m, arranged side by side, and the standard I), chambered in its upper face to receive the stems of the turning-bars, the clamps comprising the plate a, hinged to the standard of the frame, and the plate a, adj ustably attached to the hinged plate by contractile springs 'L, the angular turning-bars having their stems anchored in the standard of the frame, and a holding and releasing lever, substantially as described, and for the purpose stated.

3. In combination with the frame of a musicleaf turner, and the leaf-turning bars thereof, aholding and releasing means consisting of the body h, the part it, spring-catch 8, bolt 19, with spring 1*, and operating-lever j, substantially as described.

4:. In combination with the frame of a musicleaf turner, the leaf-clamping means herein described, consisting of a plate, a, pivotally secured to the back of the frame, and a counterpart plate, a, attached to the pivoted plate by contractile springs and held in adjustable connection therewith, substantially as and for the purpose stated.
