MUSIC-LEAF TURNER AND BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Application filed March 23, 1917. Serial No. 157,008.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. HANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eunice, in the parish of St. Landry and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners and Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music leaf turners and racks and one of the chief objects is to provide improved means for retaining and releasing the leaf turning devices.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a view of the complete device in operative position.
Figs. 2, 3 show certain details of construc tion described below and relating to the securing devices for the leaf turning members.
Fig. 4 is a section approximately on the line H of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5is a detail view of the upper spring clip retaining a bar on which the leaf turnin devices are mounted.
The main frame of the rack is indicated by 10, and a tubular member 12 is hinged to the bar 1 1 of the rack, this tubular member being designed to receive the portion 15 of supporting device 16 which extends across the top of the piano, justable attachment at one end comprising an angular member 17 passing through an eye 18 and secured to the adjacent rod by means of a set screw 19 and loop member 20.
The central portion of the frame includes two bars 21 and 22, and between these bars a rod 23 is mounted for supporting the leaf turning devices 24 and 25. The members last mentioned are hinged to bar 23, and it is obvious that any suitable number might be employed. A spring 26 connects each of members 2i and 25 with the bar 23 and aids in holding the leaves of music in position after being turned.
Springs 26 also effect the turning of the members 24; and 25 when released as described below.
At one end of the frame I provide a plurality of triggers, one for each leaf turning device, and mount these triggers on a pin 26 which passes through an upstanding lug 27 located at the edge of the slot 27 in a plate 28. This plate serves as a supporting member, and is secured to the frame proper.
- At one end of plate 28 I provide an upstandand which has an ading member 29 which is slotted at 30 for receiving an operating bar 31. A spring pressed catch or plunger 32 extends through an aperture in portion 29, and is provided with notches engaged by a pin 33 on rod 31, in order that the longitudinal movement of the rod last named may produce a similar movement of the plunger. One end of this plunger is normally moved rearwardly by means of a coiled spring 35.
In operating rod 31 for the purpose ofthrowing the plunger, a lever or arm 36 is shifted, this lever having connection with one end of the short lever 38 connected with the rod 31 at the middle portion of the lever, said short lever being in turn pivoted to a link 40- connected with the long bar of the frame.
Thetriggers each comprise a plunger engaging member 11 and a leaf-attachment engaging-member 42, the pivotal point being lntermediate 0f theseengaging portions. The plunger passes through a guide member 43 mounted on the plate 28 and also passes beneath each of the triggers. These triggers are held in position to release the leaf turning members 21 and 25 at the proper time. In order to throw the triggers to their release position, the engaging portion projecting upwardly, the plunger is shifted by means of the operating arm above described, and the opposite end of each trigger drops downwardly permitting the leaf turning devices 24 and 25 to be operated. When the leaf turning devices are to be engaged by the triggers they are thrown into position in an approximate plane with the frame at the same side of the device and one trigger at a time engages its respective turning device, the spring pressed plunger passing beneath the trigger as operated and retaining same in position.
In order to release the triggers the plunger is actuated by means of rod 31 and this rod and pin 33 are thrown out of engagement with the plunger by means of a lever 50 pivotally mounted at one side of the frame and having an engaging portion 51 passing beneath rod 31. This permits the rod '31 to be returned to normal position when desired.
The upper end of rod 23 is secured by a spring catch 7, to the frame, and permits the back cover of the music leaf to be placed in position. This catch comprises a U- Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
shaped clip, one portion of which may pass around bar 14, the clip being normally held in the position shown in the drawing by coiled spring 8. Another clip 9 is rigidly mounted on the lower bar, both clips being provided with apertures receiving the ends of rod 23. The catch or clip 7 thus acts as a bearing member for the end of bar 23, the opposite end having its bearings in clip 9. Clip 7 is pressed upwardly against the tension of spring 8 and releases the upper end of bar :23 when inserting a music leaf. The fold of the music sheet passes beneath bar 23, and each leaf turning device 2a, :25, rests beneath a sheet to be turned, when the sheets are in position to be read and are on the right hand side of the main frame.
What is claimed, is
1. In a device of the class described, a
7 main frame, a plurality of spring-held leaf vices pivotally connected therewith, a trigger for holding each leaf turning device, the triggers being pivoted at points intermediate of their ends, a plunger located beneath the triggers and engaging and retaining each trigger when the latter is in alocked position, and a spring-held rod, an engaging device thereon for operating the plunger to release the triggers separately, and a lever for throwing the rod and its engaging device out of contact with the plunger.
3. In a device of the class described, a main frame, a plurality of spring-held leaf turning devices pivotally mounted to swing on a vertical axis at approximately the cen tral portion of the frame, a supporting member at one side of the frame provided with a slot, a plurality of triggers pivoted above the supporting member and adjacent to the slot, one end of each trigger extending into the slot when the trigger is in a released position, a spring-held plunger above the sup porting member, means for guiding the plunger, a spring-held operating rod, an e11- gaging device on said rod contacting with the plunger and adapted to shift the latter and withdraw one end of the plunger from beneath one end of each trigger and allow said end of the trigger to extend into the slot for releasing the leaf turning member, and means for throwing said connecting rod.
Intestimony whereof I aifix my signature.
