CONVERTIBLE MUS IC STAND Filed May 51, 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. Payford Laserzfiee ATTORNEYS Patented June 24, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a music stand, and more especially to a knockdown sheet turning music stand.
The primary object of the invention, is the provision of a stand of this character, wherein its structure is such that the same can be knocked down when not in use for the storage thereof in the least possible space, as well as the easy carrying thereof from place to place, the stand when set up will permit of the automatic turning of the leaves of sheet music, thus eliminating the necessity of hand turning thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stand of this character, wherein foot control is had of the sheet turner, thereby liberating the hands of the player, for such purpose, which might cause interruptionin the playing of such music, the stand being novel in its construction and arrangement of the component parts thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a stand of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable in the purposes intended thereof, strong, durable, readily and easily handled, susceptible of being knocked down and set up with dispatch with minimum labor involved, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the stand constructed in accordance with the invention and set up for use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the music sheet turner release treadle of the stand.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a side view of the stand set up.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the sheet turner.
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional View taken on the line 66 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the music rack coupling end of the stand column or post.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the upright or supporting fixture. and B the rack fixture, respectively, of the music stand constructed in accordance with the invention, these being hereinafter fully described.
The fixture A comprises a tubular post or stem it, having fitted thereto near its lowermost end a plurality of swinging legs I I, which are pivoted at l2 to a bracket l3 arranged on the said post or stem i3, and these legs II when spread contact with a foundation for supporting the post or stem in an upright or vertical position.
In the uppermost end of the post or stem I0 is fitted a coupling stud l4 having the fiat faced attaching ear or tongue l5 slightly angled to-the stud 14, so that when the rack fixture B is engaged therewith the latter will slope in a forward direction when the stand is set up for use.
Formed on the post or stem ID; at its front are spaced hangers or bearings l3 slidably accommodating a shift rod H, which at its lower end is formed with a forwardly directed foot treadle 8. The rod H at the upper portion thereof is formed with a laterally directed latching arm 19, which at its outer free end is provided with an upstanding latching tip 20. The rod I1 is urged in a direction toward the rack fixture B by a coiled expansion spring 2| which surrounds the rod and is seated against an abutment 22 on the latter and against the hanger or bearing l6 next to said spring. When the treadle I8 is depressed then the rod I1 is lowered against the resistance of the spring 2! for the control of the latching tip 20 for a purpose presently described.
The rack fixture B comprises a center supporting column 23 having at its back or rear face a loop-like keeper or coupling eye 24 detachably receiving the ear or tongue l5 for the separable fitting of the fixtures A and B together. At the lower portion of this column 23 are laterally swingable rest pieces 25 for sheet music, and such pieces are pivoted at 26 to the column 23 and cooperate with foldable and extensible toggleacting back racking fittings 21 which are pivoted to the said pieces 25 and column 23 as at 28 and 29, respectively. These fittings 2! serve as back rests for sheet music.
Swingable from one side to the other of the rack fixture B with relation to the column 23 thereof is a music sheet turner in the form of an open frame 30, which is hung on the column 23 by hinges 3|, these being equipped with springs 32, so that the frame will be tensioned thereby to automatically swing it from the right-hand side of the fixture B to the left-hand side thereof, when such frame is latched at the right-hand side of such fixture.
The latching tip 20 is loosely accommodated in a guideway 33 provided in the rest piece 25 at the right-hand side of the fixture B to engage with the frame 30 when moved to this side of such fixture so as to latch the frame in this position, the tip 20 being formed with a stop shoulder 34 to limit the upward thrust of the said tip with relation to the frame when engaged thereby. The treadle l8 when depressed retracts the tip 20 for releasing the frame 30 so that through the action of the springs 32 it will swing to the left hand side of the fixture, and thereby turning sheet music as may be clipped thereto. The frame 36 carries on opposite sides thereof sheet music clips 35, and likewise the fittings 21 carry sheet music clips 36 which are for the purpose of fastening sheet music in place thereon.
The open frame 3%? permits the reading of a single sheet of music fastened thereon at either side of such frame, it being understood, of course, to accomplish this the said frame must swing to either side of the fixture B, to the right-hand or to the left-hand side thereof.
When the stand is not in use it can be knocked down, the fixtures A and B being detached from each other, and the swingable parts of each are then folded, bringing the stand in a collapsed condition, resulting in compactness for storage or carrying purposes.
It is required that the frame 38 be latched at the right-hand side of the fixture, so that on release thereof it will be automatically shifted to the left-hand side of such fixture, thereby eliminating the hand turning of the sheet of music supported on such frame, the unlatchingof the latter being had by depressing the foot treadle [8 by the user of the stand.
What is claimed is:
A stand of the kind described, comprising a tubular supporting fixture having a flat faced attaching ear formed thereon at an angle thereto, a coupling stud on the fixture, a, foldable sheet rack fixture having a, keeper on the rear thereof which is separably engaged by the attaching car on the coupling stud, an en frame hinged central to the rack fixture, for sheet turning, tensioning means acting on the frame for moving the same from one side of the rack fixture to the other side thereof, a foot treadle operated latch comprising a vertical rod formed with a laterally directed triangular shaped latching arm, the outer free end of which is provided with an upstanding latching tip movably fitted with the fixtures for engaging and releasing this frame when under tension at one side of the rack fixture, means for limiting the movement of the latch relative to the frame, sheet clips carried by the foldable legs on the supporting fixture, a bracket on the lower end of said fixture, to which said legs are pivotally connected rack fixture and frame, respectively, and means for urging the latch in latching position with respect to the frame RAYFORD LISENBEE.
