SPECIFICATION forming part `of Letters Patent No.. 331,484, dated December 1, 1885.

Be it known that l, WILLIAM E. ELAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Americus, in the county of Sumter and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TicketCases, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my improved ticket-case. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a perspective View, in detail, of one of the ticket boxes or receptacles; Fig. 4, a similar view, showing the three sections forming the box or receptacle separated from each other. Fig. 5 is a cross-section taken through the front end of the box or receptacle; Fig. 6, a similar View taken through the rear end thereof; Fig. 7, a detail view, in perspective, of a portion of one of the transverse partitions.

The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in railroad cr other ticket cases, wherein are employed a series of individual boxes or receptacles for holding the tickets; and the object of the in vention is to so construct these boxes or receptacles as to render them laterally extensible, in order to increase their width to adapt them to tickets varying in length or width. This object I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a case of any suitable shape and size for containing the ticket boxes or receptacles B, hereinafter described. The case Ahas transverse partitions G, arranged upon an incline, as shown in Fig. 2, which support the boxes or receptacles B, and have at their front end a depending flange, a, which forms a stop to prevent said boxes or receptacles from being accidentally withdrawn, a lug, b, upon its sides striking against the flange. It frequently occurs that the tickets, when coming from the printers,are not properly cut, in which event, if they are out too long, they could not be introduced into the rigid box or receptacle without first taking a pair of scissors and trimming'each ticket.

To attain this end, I provide means whereby -each box or receptacle is rendered laterally extensible, so that itswidth may beincreased, as circumstances require, and the best method `which I consider of carrying out/the broad principle of the invention is to construct the box or receptacle in two or more longitudinal sections adj ustably connected together. In the present instance I have shown two sections, D E, which form the sides and bottom of the box or receptacle, and a section, F, to form a supplemental bottom. The sides c of the sections D E are constructed in the usual manner-that is to say, they are inclined at their front end, and have flanges d to retain the tickets in the box or receptacle. The bottom e of the section E has rigidly connected to its rear end an upwardly-projecting screw.- threaded bolt, f, which extends up through an elongated transverse slot, g, in the bottom h of the section D, and also through alongitudinal slot, t', in the section F, as shown in Fig. 6. The bottom h of the section D has rigidly secured to it at its front end a screwthreaded bolt, j, which extends down through a transverse slot, k, in the bottom e of the section, E, as shown in Figs. et and 5. .The bot toms of the sections DE, and also the section F, overlap each other, and are held together by suitable nuts, m, on the screw-threaded end of the bolts fj, and by loosening the nuts the bottoms can be brought nearer to or farther from each other to diminish or increase the width of the box or receptacle, as circumstances require. The partitions C near their front edge have slotsZ extending the entire width thereof, into which enter the ends of the bolts f, to hold the boxes or receptacles in place.

In place of the bolts f as a means for holding the boxes or receptacles in position on the shelves or partitions when they are made to engage with the slots therein, any lip or projection extending from the bottom of the box or receptacle will answer the same purpose. Therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the means shown.

This is accomplished by adjusting the section F either forward or backward, which will increase or diminish the depth of the opening n, through which the tickets are extracted, vthus adapting the opening to the varying thickness of card-board from which the tickets are made. If a ticket made of thick card-board is used,y the opening a can be enlarged by unscrewing the nut on the bolt f and slipping the false bottom back, and ifV a thin-ticket is used the opening can be diminished by slipping the false bottom forward, thus providing lan adjustable false bottom that will control the size of the opening at the front end of the box or receptacle. v y

I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to thev means shown of rendering the box or receptacle laterally extensible to accommodate it to special tickets and to irregular card tickets of any kind-such as local-excursion card tickets-as other' means may be substituted that will accomplish the same end and come within the scope of my invention.

y Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A box or receptacle for holding tickets, f

having an open front end and laterally extensible or adjustable sides to increase or diminish its width, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A box or receptacle for tickets, having an open-front end with inclined and inwardlyextending flanges, said box or receptacle adapted' to be laterally extensible to increase or diminish the width thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A box or receptacle for holding tickets, constructed of two sections, each of which forms one side and bottom of the box, and con nected together, substantially as described, whereby they are capable of lateral adjustment to increase or diminish the width'of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. j A box or receptacle for tickets, open at its front end and having inwardly extending iianges and a longitudinally-adjustable false bottom to diminish or increase the space through which the tickets are extracted, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. A box or receptacle for tickets, constructed of three independent sections, vtwo of said sections forming, respectively, the sides and bottom of the box, and connected together, whereby they are laterally extensible or adjustable to increase or diminish the width of the box, and alongitudinally-adjustable false bottom connected to the bottom of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. f

6. A ticket-case provided with a series. of inclined partitions having a depending flange and a slot at their front ends, in combination with a series of ticket boxes or receptacles having bolts or projections upon their under side and front end to engage with the slot in the inclined partitions, and upwardly-extending lugs upon the rear end of the box to abut against the flange on the inclined partition,l

and prevent the box from becoming entirely withdrawn, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
