THOMAS HUTCHINSON AND GHAUNCEY H. AUSTIT', OFGROSVENOR DALE, CONNECTICUT; SAID HUTCHIN SON ASSIGNOR TO SAID AUSTIN.
MEAT-CUTTERS CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 551,316, dated December 10, 1895;
Application filed June 7, 1895. Satin-1N0. 551,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS Hurcnnvson and CHAUNCEY ll. AUSTIN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Grosvenor Dale, in the county of VVindh-am and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in hleatCutters Cabinets; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which' Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved meat-cutters cabinet. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on a vertical plane transversely through the middle. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the top drawer removed from the cabinet. Fig. it is a longitudinal sectional view of the top drawer on a vertical plane through the middle of the same and Fig. 5 is a plan of the top of the cabinet, showing the tool slots or holders, but with the tools or implements removed.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention has relation to cabinets for holding tools, so that any tool or implement required for use shall have its proper and easily-accessible place when wanted, and yet be out of the way when not required for immediate use; and it consists in the detailed and specific construction and combination of parts of an implement-cabinet of that type adapted particularly for the use of butchers and meat-cutters, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
On the accompanying drawings, the reference-letter A denotes the exterior casing of our improved cabinet, the flat top of which is reinforced by a thick slab or block of wood B, having several series of oblong slots Ct to and circular holes I) b, all of which extend entirely through the top and are for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Sliding in the casing A are three or more drawersC, the uppermost one of which, immediately below the slotted top, has its back made in two parts, viz: a lower stationary part- D and an upper movable section E, which is hinged to the fixed part D by hinges (1- (Z in such a manner that it will swing both forward and back easily. Normally this hinged back E is maintained in a vertical position by means of leaf-springs e e, placed on opposite sides, with their lower ends fastened in the stationary bottom piece or ledge D, while their upper free ends bear against opposite sides of the movable back piece E, at opposite ends of the same, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and l, the dotted lines in the last-named figure indicating the play or motion of the movable back in both directions, forward and back.
Into the slots a and apertures Z) in the top of the cabinet are inserted the hatchet, cleaver, knives, sharpening-steels, and other tools and implements used by the meat-cutter in prosecuting his trade, the handles of the several implements projecting above the slots, while the blades project down into the drawer below, as illustrated in the sectional view, Fig. 2, with their flat sides parallel to one another and to the back of the drawer. As it is the intention to place this cabinet, equipped with all the proper implements arranged as described, next to the meat-block, all the tools will be within easy and convenientreach of the meat-cutter, and in such a position that any one of them can be readily grasped without the slightest danger of cutting the fingers, as the blades are all protected by the slotted top into which the tools are inserted.
If desired, the upper edge of the hinged back E appertaining to the top drawer, immediately below the tools, may be covered with an overlapping cushion F, of leather or other suitable material, so that in pulling this drawer out, or pushing it in, while the tools are in position in the cabinet, this cushioned and hinged back E F will operate as a scraper or cleaning device to scrape any particles of meat, gristle, &c., that may adhere to the blades after use, off them, leaving them clean and bright. The particles thus scraped off will drop down into the bottom of the top drawer C, from which they can be removed at leisure. Larger particles or slices of meat, &c., which adhere to the blades of the implement-s after use 011 the block, will be removed as the tools are inserted into their appropriate narrow slots in the top, which are only large enough to admit of the insertion of the blades. Thus it will be seen that the slotted top, in combination with the sliding drawer having a hinged and cushioned back, serves, in addi tion to its function as a receptacle for the tools or implements, as a means for cleaning oil the blades by removing any particles or small bits of meat, gristle, bone-tissue, or similar substance that may adhere to them after use.
\Ve prefer to build this cabinet with at least three drawers, including the top one, so that the uppermost drawer may serve as a receptacle for small pieces of meat, &e., wiped off 1. The combination with the casing A having slotted and apertured top B, adapted for the insertion of the blades of meat-cutters tools and implements, of the sliding topdrawer C provided with a back comprising the stationary crosspiece or ledge D and hinged spring-actuated section E; substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination with the casing A having slotted and apertured top B, adapted to form a receptacle for meat cutters tools and implements, of the sliding top-drawer Chaving a movable spring-actuated back E provided with a cushion. F along its upper free end, adapted to scrape against the sides of the depending blades of the implements inserted through the slotted top as the drawer is moved forward or back; substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS HUTCHINSON. CHAUNCEY H. AUSTIN.
