JOHN H. WILSON, 0F SMITHFIELID, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUTTER FOR HARVESTING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smithfield, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutters for Harvesting-h lachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved cutter bar for harvesting machines, and the object of the invention is a bar of this kind to which all of the knives are locked by a simple closing plug, the removal of which will permit the removal of all of the knives or as many of them as may be necessary.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described,
accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken through the cutter bar, the central portion being broken away, and the knives being shown in plan. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bar, a portion being broken out, and the knives being omitted.
In these drawings, 1 represents the cutter bar, which bar is provided upon its upper position upon the machine upon which it is to be used, and a bore 3 runs from one end of the bar to a point adjacent the opposite end, and at its open end is threaded to receive a closing plug 4:. This plug may take the form of a bolt, set screw with lock nut or any other suitable form. The bolt is also longitudinally slotted as shown at 5, saidv slot extending from the front of the bar to the bore 3 and communicating therewith, be ing of the same length as the bore. Suitable knives 6 have flat blade portions and cylindrical backs 7 the backs of the blades sliding in the bore 3, the body portions of the blades sliding in the slot 5, and the cutting edges of the blades, which may be of any desired pitch, projecting in advance of the bar.
In use the blades are slipped into position one after the other entering the bore 3 and slot 5 from the opened end, and when all of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 25, 1908.
the knives are in place the opened end of the Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Serial No. 464,435.
bore 3 is closed by the plug 4, thus securely locking all of the knives in position.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A cutter bar having a longitudinal bore open at one end and longitudinally slotted, the slot intersecting with said bore, and both bore and slot extending to a point adjacent one end of the bar, cutter blades having portions fitting in said bore and slot, i1; closing plug fitting in the open end of the ore.
2. The combination with a cutter bar having a longitudinal bore, the bore extending from one end of the bar to a point adjacent the other end, and the bar being slotted from the bore to the front, the slot being of the same length as the bore; of cutter blades having a cylindrical back sliding in said bore, and having fiat body portions sliding in the slot, the cutting edges of the blades projecting from the slot, and means for closing the opened end of the bore, for the purpose of locking said blades in place.
3. A cutter bar longitudinally split, and having a longitudinally extending bore, one end of said bore being permanently closed and the other end opening through an end of the bar, blades slidably held in the bore and in the split portion of the bar and a plug threading into the open end of the bore to prevent removal of said blades.
4. A cutter bar having a longitudinal bore extending from one end of the bar to a point adjacent the opposite end, and longitudinally slotted, the slot being parallel with the bore opening through the end of the cutter bar adjacent the entrance to the bore, and
