PEN WIPER AND HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, ISAAC W. ALLYN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen Wipers and Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in pen wipers and holders, having for its object to provide a receptacle adapted to receive and retain a pen and prevent the same from corroding; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined inkstand and holder, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the bristles arranged in a bunch and provided with securing and contracting bands.

Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A designates the base or bottom plate of an inkstand having ink-wells or receptacles B B made integral therewith or separate therefrom.

The base-plate and ink-wells are of any preferred design or material, said ink-wells being provided with covers or stoppers B B, as is usual.

0 designates a holder or receiver, preferably arranged between the ink-wells,and made integral with or separate from the base-plate A thereof, as may be desired. Within the receiver G, I place a bunch of bristles, D, cemented, glued, or otherwise securely held together at their base, the upper ends thereof being free and filled with a powdered noncorrosive substance. At the base of the bristles D, I place a band, E, of tin or any other preferred material, which surrounds the said bristles and serves to more securely hold the same together.

F designates a similar band of slightlygreater diameter than the band E, as shown in Fig. 5, over which it fits and is adapted to slide. In Fig. 3 the band F is of the same diameter as the band E.

The dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 5 show the band F in a more elevated position than it is represented in full lines.

I sprinkle a finely-powdered substance in between the bristles, which will prevent a pen from corrodingas, for instance, talc, which I find unobj actionable and gives entire satisfaction.

I attach importance to the bristles arranged in a bunch and supplied with talc in a finelypowdered state, and provided with means for securing the bristles together.

By reference to Figs. 2, 3, and 5 of the drawings it will be seen that the bristles are so cut and arranged as to present :an oval top surface, which I find to be very useful.

In practice I makethe stoppers B tapering, and form the necks of the ink-wells similar in shape to cause said stopper to fit tightly therein and prevent the escape of ink when the ink- Well is overturned.

I am aware that various modifications in the form and proportion of parts can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, the essential features of which will be readily understood from the foregoing description.

In order to render the device more effective, it is desirable that the pen be first cleaned or wiped on the bristles before placing it in the holderthat is, standing it in the bristles infa vertical position.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a pen wiper and holder, the"j*combination of a bunch of bristles cemented or glued together at the bottom thereof, a band surrounding said bristles at the base, and @an adjustable band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
