Be it known that I, LEWIS S. HoYT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Wollaston, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pen-VVipers and Ink-VVells, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improved devices for ink-Wells and pen-wipers; and it has for its objects the preservation of the pens and conservation of the writing-ink. I attain these objects by the devices shown in the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 illustrates in perspective the improved form of the neck of the ink-receptacle disassociated from its accessories with its cover omitted. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the grooved pen-wiper support. Fig. 3 exhibits a perspective of the pen-wiper before its adjustment over the wiper-support. Fig. 4: denotes a vertical central section of the receptacle and its accessories in modified form assembled for use and covered. Fig. 5 is a modified form of my invention in section, as in Fig. 2, with the pen-Wiper of circular form. Fig. 6 is a similar view with the flexible penwiper circular and molded in grooves, as in Fig. 2.

Corresponding letters of reference designate similar features throughout the drawings, referring to which A denotes the ink-well, the neck of which, Fig. 1, has one straight side B, the remainder of the neck being of semicircular form, as at C. The rim of the neck is provided with two slots D D adjacent to the junction of the straight and curved portion of the neck and form the seats for the square journals E E,

which sustain without rotation the supporting-piece F, which is grooved or furrowed, as at G, and which receives and individually suspends in a vertical position the depending pen-wiper H, composed of any flexible and preferably sericeous material which Will throw the residue of ink from the pen while being wiped downward to'the ink-well. The capacity of the pocket I will receive the sup port F sufliciently close to compress-assisted by the pressure of the pen in wiping off or cleaninginto said grooves G and facilitate the operation. The organized devices are shown in their final positions inFig. 4.

1n the modified construction, Fig. 5, the pen-wiper H is of like material for the precipitation of the ink to the well, as in the former instance, the pocket 1 embracing a cord J in lieu of the support F, the wiper being removably confined within and against the circular wall of the bottle by the springband K conforming to the groove L in the inner circumference of the neck. 'An annular depression M in the inner perimeter of the orifice also supports the wiper H and sustains it in proper position relative to its height from the neck. A depression N, formed in the shoulder of the ink-receptacle A, seats a gasket R, of rubber or other soft material, to cushion the cover and exclude the air and dust.

In the modified construction, Fig. 6, the penwiper H is also of circular form and of compressible or flexible material, having a flaring orifice and provided with grooves Gr, having serrations transversely their length to more efiiciently remove the ink and prevent corrosion. Said grooves are similar to those in the supporting-piece F, which facilitates the discharge of any surplus ink to the well. A semicircular depression P in the interior of the base of the neck receives the corresponding projecting flange Q of the flexible penwiper, thus firmly but removably retaining it in position.

While these modifications are designed as anticipations of other alleged improvements, I consider that they do not affect the essential feature of my invention, which comprises more particularly a removable pen-wiper of compressible and sericeous material and the accessories to and devices for its support, and while I have described the preferred manner of carrying my improved invention into efiect I do not adhere to the precise forms illustrated, as the same may be varied without departing from the true spirit thereof, which, having ascertained,

I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States and claim- 1. An ink-well and a pen-wiper of compressible and sericeous material adapted to rest within the orifice of, and to precipitate the ink in the ink-well during the process of cleaning the pen, and means embraced by said Wiper for its individual support.

2. The combination of a receptacle to contain writing-ink having a neck provided with slots, a grooved supporting-piece adapted to be sustained by said slots, and a depending pen-Wiper embracing the grooved support and situate within said receptacle arranged to throw the residue of ink from the pen into the well.

3. In a device of the character described, a receptacle for writing-ink having a depression, means filling said depression for protection of the ink, a shoulder containing said depression, a neck provided with slots, a

grooved support provided with journals, said slots and journals coacting to prevent rotation of said support and a pen-Wiper adapted to be maintained by said support in a vertical position in the receptacle.
