(Cl. 150-35) This invention relates to combination billfolds and coin carriers, and more particularly to a combination billfold and coin carrier in which the coins are held in individual compartments provided therefor.

Prior to the present invention, combination billfolds and coin carriers in which the coins are held in individual compartments were known. The advantage of this type of a wallet is that it makes the money carried in the wallet easily accessible in the desired denominations. In some of the wallets of this type in the prior art, the coin carrying part of the wallet is too bulky. In other wallets of this type the coins are not held firmly enough in place and as a result fall out of the wallet. In still others, the coins cannot be quickly removed from their compart ments and the feature of having individual compartments to make the coins accessible in desired denominations is vitiated. In the wallet of the present invention, these disadvantages are overcome.

In accordance with the present invention, the wallet is formed by two pieces of leather sewed together to define a pocket for paper currency. The assembly of the two pieces of leather is folded together and a slide fastener is provided to hold the wallet in its folded condition. An additional piece of leather is sewed to the inner one of the two pieces of leather defining the pocket. Slots corresponding in length to the diameters of the coins to be carried by the wallet are cut in this additional piece of leather and seams are sewn beneath these slots so that each slot forms a pocket into which the coin can be inserted. The coins are inserted half-way into the slots so that the lower halves of the coins are behind the leather piece in which the slots are cut and the upper halves of the coins are in front of this piece of leather. This arrangement causes the coins to be held firmly in place, yet still permits them to be easily removed from the wallet.

Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an improved wallet comprising a combination billfold and coin carrier.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination billfold and coin carrier of the type in which coins are carried in individual compartments wherein the coins are held firmly in place and yet are easily removable from the wallet.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide an improved combination billfold and coin carrier of the type described which is of simple construction and easily manufactured.

Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent as the following detailed description of the invention unfolds and when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the wallet in its folded condition;

FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken through the wallet along the line 2- 2 of FIG. 1; and

FIG. 3 is a plan view of the inner face of the wallet in its open condition.

As shown in the drawings, the wallet comprises an outer rectangular sheet of leather 11 to which a second rectangular sheet of leather 13 is sewed by means of stitches 15. The

11 and 13 are coextensive and the stitches 15 extend substantially around the entire common outer perimeter of the two

sheets

11 and 13. The assembly of the

11 and 13 provide a laminated outer wall for the wallet. A rectangular sheet of leather 17 approximately the same size as the

sheets

11 and 13 is fastened to the assembly of the

sheets

11 and 13 on three sides by means of the stitches 15. The upper side of the sheet 17 is not fastened to the assembly of the

sheets

13 and 15 so that a pocket 13 is defined between the sheet 13 and the sheet 17. The three edges of the sheet 17 which are fastened by means of the stitches 15 to the

sheets

13 and 11 coincide with the edges of the

sheets

13 and 11 but the top edges of the

sheets

13 and 11 extend out a little beyond the edge of the sheet 17. A fourth rectangular sheet of leather 21 substantially coextensive with the sheet 17 is fastened to the sheet 17 by means of the stitches 15 and by means of additional stitches 23 running along the top edge of the

sheets

17 and 21. The top edge of the sheet 21 is folded around the top edge of the sheet 17 and is fastened to the top edge of the sheet 17 by means of the stitches 23, as is best illustrated in FIG. 2. The assembly of the

leather sheets

11, 13, 17 and 21 is folded in half along a fold line designated by the reference number 25. A slide fastener 27 is used to hold the wallet in its folded condition. The slide fastener is mounted on the wallet by being sandwiched on each side between the edges of the

sheets

11 and 13 and is fastened to the

sheets

11 and 13 by the stitches 15. The slide fastener extends across the top of the wallet and down one side of the wallet opposite from where the wallet is folded along the fold line 25. A plurality of slits are cut through the sheet 21 to provide pockets to receive coins. The slits 29 are for receiving half dollars and accordingly have lengths corresponding to the diameters of half dollars. The slits 31 are to receive quarters, and accordingly have lengths corresponding to the diameters of quarters. The slits 33 are to receive dimes, and accordingly have lengths corresponding to the diameters of dimes. A line of stitches 32 spaced beneath the upper slits 29 and the upper slits 31 fasten the sheet 21 to the sheet 17 to define a bottom for the coins inserted in these slits. A line of stitches 34 spaced beneath the slits 33 fastens the sheet 21 to the sheet 17 to define a bottom for the coins inserted in these slits. The stitches 15 define a bottom for the coins inserted into the

lower slits

29 and 31. A hole is formed at each end of each of the

slits

29, 31 and 33. The half dollars are inserted into the slits 29 so that the bottom halves of the half dollars are sandwiched between the sheet 17 and the sheet 21 and the upper halves of the half dollars are positioned in front of the sheet 21 as is best illustrated in FIG. 2. The half dollars are,

designated by the reference number 35. The holes at the end of the slits 29 permit the leather material of the sheet 21 to be expanded outwardly away from the sheet 17 so that the half dollars may be received. The quarters are received in a similar manner in the slits 31 and the dimes are received in a similar manner in the slits 33. In the drawings, the quarters are designated by the reference number 37, and the dimes are designated by the reference number 39.

The nickels, which are designated by the reference number 41, are held in the wallet in a slightly different manner. A long slit 43 is cut in the leather sheet 21. Just above the slit 43 the sheet 21 is sewn to the sheet 17 by means of stitches 45 extending along the length of the slit 43. Another line of stitches 47 fastening the sheet 21 to the sheet 17 is provided below the slit 43 extending parallel to the slit 43 for the entire length of the slit 43 but spaced from the slit 43. Three lines of stitches 49 fastening the sheet 21 to the sheet 17 are provided extending from the line of stitches 47 to the slit 43 spaced from each other to define four pockets into which the nickels 41 are inserted. The stitches 49 in effect divide the slit 43 into four slits corresponding in length to the diameter of a nickel. When the nickels are inserted 3 into the four provided pockets, the bottom halves of the nickels will be sandwiched between the sheet 21 and the sheet 17 and the upper halves of the nickels will be in front of the sheet 17.

Because the lower halves of the coins are sandwiched between the

sheets

17 and 21 and the upper halves of the coins are positioned in front of the sheet 17, the sheet 17 pushes the coins against the inner side of the sheet 21 so that the coins are firmly held in place and yet are easily removable. All of the

slits

29, 31, 33 and 43 are out without removing substantially any material so that the slits have substantially no transverse dimension. This feature makes the structure easy to manufacture and aids in holding the coins firmly in place.

Thus there is provided a combination coin carrier and billfold which is of simple construction and can be economically manufactured, and in which the coins are firmly held in individual compartments and yet are easily removable.

The above description is of a preferred embodiment and many modifications may be made thereto without departing from the proper scope or fair meaning of the subjoined claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A combination coin carrier and billfold comprising first and second flexible sheets of leather-like material fastened to each other partially around their peripheries to define a pocket adapted to receive paper currency, a third sheet of leather-like material fastened to said second sheet all the way around its periphery, the assembly of said first, second and third sheets being folded in half with said third sheet on the inside, said third sheet having a plurality of slits defined therethrough, said third sheet being 'fastened to said second sheet at points spaced beneath each of said slits in a direction perpendicular to said slits, said slits having lengths corresponding to the diameters of coins so that such coins may be inserted through said slits and held with their lower halves sandwiched between said second and third sheets and their upper halves positioned in front of said third sheet.

2. A combination coin carrier and billfold as recited in claim 1 wherein means are provided to hold the assembly of said first, second and third sheets in a folded condition.

3. A combination coin carrier and billfold as recited in claim 2 wherein said means to'hold said assembly of first, second and third sheets in a folded condition is a slide fastener fixed to the periphery of said assembly.

4. A combination coin carrier and billfold as recited in claim 1 wherein small holes are defined at the ends of at least some of said slits.

5. A combination coin carrier and billfold as recited in 4 claim 1 wherein said first and second sheets are fastened together by means of stitches.

6. A combination coin carrier'and billfold comprising first, second, third and fourth rectangular sheets of leatherlike material, said sheets being positioned together in sandwich formation so that the peripheries of said first, second, third and fourth sheets coincide on three sides, the peripheries of said first and second sheets coincide on the fourth side, and the peripheries of said third and fourth sheets coincide on the fourth side, stitches extending around said three sides of the assembly of said first, second, third and fourth sheets fastening said first, second, third and fourth sheets together, stitches extending along the fourth side of said first and second sheets fastening said first and second sheets together, stitches extending along the fourth side of said third and fourth sheets fastening said third and fourth sheets together so that a pocket is defined between said second and third sheets adapted to receive paper currency, the assembly of said first, second, third and fourth sheets being folded in half with said fourth sheet on the inside, said fourth sheet having a plurality of slits defined therethrough, said fourth sheet being fastened to said third sheet by stitches at points spaced beneath each of said slits in a direction perpendicular to said slits, the lengths of said slits corresponding to the diameters of coins so that coins can be inserted through said slits and held with their lower halves sandwiched between said third and fourth sheets and their upper halves positioned in front of said fourth sheet.

A combination coin carrier and billfold as recited in claim 6 wherein a slide fastener is provided to hold the assembly of said first, second, third and fourth sheets in a folded condition, said slide fastener being moutned on said assembly by having edge portions sandwiched between said first and second sheets said edge portions being fastened to said first and second sheets by the stitches extending along two sides of said first and second sheets.

1. A COMBINATION COIN CARRIER AND BILLFOLD COMPRISING FIRST AND SECOND FLEXIBLE SHEETS OF LEATHER-LIKE MATERIAL FASTENED TO EACH OTHER PARTIALLY AROUND THEIR PERIPHERIES TO DEFINE A POCKET ADAPTED TO RECEIVE PAPER CURRENCY, A THIRD SHEET OF LEATHER-LIKE MATERIAL FASTENED TO SAID SECOND SHEET ALL THE WAY AROUND ITS PERIPHERY, THE ASSEMBLY OF SAID FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD SHEETS BEING FOLDED IN HALF WITH SAID THIRD SHEET ON THE INSIDE, SAID THIRD SHEET HAVING A PLURALITY OF SLITS DEFINED THERETHROUGH, SAID THIRD SHEET BEING FASTENED TO SAID SECOND SHEET AT POINTS SPACED BENEATH EACH OF SAID SLITS IN A DIRECTION PERPENDICULAR TO SAID SLITS, SAID SLITS HAVING LENGTHS CORRESPONDING TO THE DIAMETERS OF COINS SO THAT SUCH COINS MAY BE INSERTED THROUGH SAID SLITS AND HELD WITH THEIR LOWER HALVES SANDWICHED BETWEEN SAID SECOND AND THIRD SHEETS AND THEIR UPPER HALVES POSITIONED IN FRONT OF SAID THIRD SHEET.
