To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, VALENTIN BoRsT, aciti zen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elevators, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to apparatus for raising ,and lowering garbage-receptacles and other articles and the like, and it consists in the novel features of construction, which are fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- V Figurel isavertical section in the plane yy, Fig. 2, of an apparatus embodying my invention. In the drawings, the letter A designates the main frame of the apparatus, which in the example shown is made of bars of angleiron suitably arranged, but any material possessing the rigidity necessary for the purpose can be used.
B is a sliding frame or platform arranged in the main frame to support the garbage-receptacle, which latter is not shown in the drawings.
At the upper end of the main frame A is a projecting rim, C, which rests on the sidewalk when the apparatus is placed in position and sustains the same. The rim projects outward to such an extent that a sufficient space can be left between the edges of the hole in the walk and the frame in order to prevent the working parts from coming into contact with the walk, and to said rim is hinged at a a cover, D, which closes the opening in the walk.
The sliding frame or platform B, previously mentioned, is supported upon a pair of lazytongs, F, of ordinary construction, which are pivoted to two of its opposite sides at b, and
' also to the lower part of the main frame A at c, and in the example shown in the drawings the lazy-tongs-are each composed of three elements; but the number used in practice will vary with the height to which and the rapidity with which the raised.
The sliding frame is raised or lowered by the motion given to the lazy-tongs by means of the rods G, which are secured to their lower joints at d, and are secured to slides H, which run in the guide-bars I, secured to the frame, said slides being connected to the cover D by arms J, which are pivoted to the bottom of the cover.
To balance the weight of the sliding frame and that of the empty receptacle, I attach weights K to the two opposite sides of the sliding frame, which weights are connected to the same by ropes or chains e, which pass over pulleys f, secured to the main frame at g, the tendency ofA the weights being to draw the sliding frame upward. It is now evident that if the cover D is raised the motion ofthe same will be transmitted through the medium ofthe arms J, slides H, and rods G to the joint d of the lazy-tongs F, and, owing to the well-known principle of the lazy-tongs, the small movement given to the coverD in lifting the. same, and which is transmitted tothe lazy-tongs, as described, will result in a comparatively-large movement of the top `joints of the lazy-tongs where they are connected to the sliding frame, and the same will be raised through a considerable height. rIhe reverse will be true when the cover is again closed.
The parts described are so constructed that when the cover D is fully opened the sliding frame will have reached the top of the frame or will be on a level with the sidewalk, or, since the point at which the cover is hinged to the rim of the frame lies some distance outward from the body of the frame, the garbagereceptacle and its contents can be the level of the sidewalk.
In order to insure greater strength and a more steady movement ofthe parts, I construct the rods G as shown in the modification Fig. 5. [n this case the ends ofthe rods mentioned are provided with yokes M, which extend nearly across the main frame and are connected to the lazy-tongs at d, as before.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1. The combination of the main frame, the sliding frame or platform supported on lazytongs, the cover hinged to the main frame,
garbage receptacle is to be lifted above IOO and the connections of the lever with the lazyi Weights secured to the sliding frame or plattongs, substantially as shown and described.
' 2. The combination ofthe main frame provided with a projecting rim, the sliding frame 5 or platform, the lazy-tongs secured to the main frame, and the sliding frame or platform, the cover hinged to the rim of the main frame, the connections of the cover With the lazytongs, and the balancing-Weights connected io with the sliding frame or platform, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of themain frame provided with aprojecting rim, the sliding frame or platform, the lazy-tongs secured to the main I5 frame and the sliding frame or platform, the cover hinged to the rim of the main frame, the guide-bars I, secured to the frame, the slides H, therods G, connecting the slides with the lazy-tongs, the pivoted arms J, which connect 2o the slides with the cover, and the balancingform, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of the main frame provided With a projecting rim, the sliding frame or platform, the lazy-tongs secured to the main 25 frame and the sliding frame or platform, the cover hinged to the rimof the main frame, the guide-bars I, secured to the frame, the slides H, the yoked rods G, connecting the slides With the lazy-tongs, the pivoted arms J, connecting 3o the slides with the cover, and the balancing- Weights secured to the -sliding frame or platform, substantially as shown and described.
