Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, DANIEL S. SEBASTIAN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vallace, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in fire-escapes, the object being to provide a portable fire-escape of novel construction that may be quickly raised and lowered and also leveled or tilted laterally when necessary.
I will describe a fire-escape embodying my invention and then point out the novel fea tures in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a [ire-escape embodying my invention in use. Fig. is a sectional elevation thereof, showing the lire-escape in raised position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line. 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the device in lowered position. Fig. etis a sectional view showing the raising and lowering mechanism. Fig. 5 is a plan illustrating the raising and lowering cams, and Fig. 6 indicates the fire-escape in tilted position.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a truck-frame mounted on wheels (3, and arranged to rock on this truck-frame is a platform T. As here shown, this platform has lugs 8 at its ends, through which a rod 9 7 passes, said rod belng connected at its ends with the end boards of the body or frame 5. i
Having bearings in the end boards of the body or frame and near the sides are shafts 1O 11, on which eccentrics 12 13 are mounted, these eccentrics being designed to engage with the under side of the platform 7. At the rear end the shafts 1O 11 are provided with sprocket-wheels 1e 15, engaged by a sprocketchain 16, and one of the shafts has an operating-lever 17. By swinging the lever it is obvious that the platform 7 may be rocked to bring it on a level should the truck happen to be on a grade, or the platform may be swung to such position as to tilt the lire-escape toward a building, as indicated in Figs.
1 and 6. To prevent tipping over of the truck, I provide anchoring devices consisting of telescopic rods 18 19, mounted to swlng underneath the body 5 and outward to the l side thereof.
The outer member 19 of each rod has a threaded ring 20 for receiving a screw-shaft 21, having a swiveled lower end 22. I-Vhen these devices are not in use or when the tire-escape is being drawn along, the screw-shafts may be turned to horizontal position and then, with the supporting-arms, turned underneath the body 5.
Extended upward from the platform 7 are posts 23 24, and pivotally connected to these posts are the inner ends of the lower links of lazy-tongs 25, the outer ends of certain of the opposite links having swinging connection with cross-bars 26. The outer ends of the upper links are connected to cross-bars 27,
28, which engage on tracks 29, to which a cage is secured. The opposite sides of this cage, it will be noted, are arranged to swing downward, so as to form a platform between the cage and a window-sill or the like, so that people may readily pass from the window into the cage. The cage is held practically in a central position by means of springs 31, connected to the center of the cage at the bottom and also connecting the rods 27.
Movable upward along the posts 23 2% is an actuating-platform 32, on the body of which are short standards 33, carrying rollers at for engaging with the lower links of the lazy tongs, as shown in Fig. 2.
Mounted to rotate around the lower portion of each post is a circular plate 35, each provided with a handle or lever 36, and the two plates are provided with intermeshing teeth 37, so that by operating one of the plates through the medium of its lever the other plate may be rotated. On each plate are upwardly-extended inclined planes 38, the in clined planes of a plate being opposite each other, and engaging with these planes are rollers 39, mounted in hangers a0 ail, depending from the plate Above the plate 35 each post is provided with a lixcd collar 42, and between this collar and the under side of the plate 32 is a spiral spring 4E3.
In the operation when it is desired to raise the cage the plates 35 are to be rotated by means of one of the levers 36, so that the cams or inclines 38 will move the plate 32 upward, whereby the rollers 34:, engaging with the lower links of the lazy-tongs, willswing said tongs in such direction as to move the cage 1 upward, and the springs 43 will aid materially and on these cross-bars 27 are grooved pulleys in this movement or relieve the operator from a considerable amount of manual exertion. Of course when the plates 35 are moved in the reverse direction the cage, with its load, will descend by gravity.
The levers 36 are limited in their movement for moving the cage upward by means of stops 44 on the platform 7. If desired, steadying or guy ropes 45 may be connected to the corners of the cage.
While I have described the device particularly 'as a fire-escape, it is obvious that it will be found convenient for the use of linemen in stringing wires or making overhead repairs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fire-escape, comprisingasupport, lazytongs pivoted on the support and provided with a carrier at its upper end, a verticallymovable member provided on its upper face with means for engaging the lower links of the lazy-tongs intermediate of their ends, and ]means for operating the said movable mem- 2. A fire-escape comprising a truck, posts extended upward from the truck, lazy-tongs having their lower links pivotally connected to said posts, a plate movable vertically along the posts, rollers carried by said plate and engaging with the lower links of the lazytongs, cams for causing the vertical movement of said plate, and a cage carried by the lazytongs.
3. A fire-escape comprising a truck, posts extended upward from the truck, a plate movable vertically along the posts, lazy-tongs having their lower links pivoted to said posts, rollers carried by a plate and engaging with said lower links, plates mounted to rotate on the posts, inclined planes carried by the vertically-movable plate and engaging with said inclined planes, and a cage supported by the lazy-tongs.
4:. A fire-escape comprising a truck, posts extended upward from the truck, plates mounted to rotate around the lower ends of said posts and having gear connections one plate with the other, opposite inclined planes carried by each plate, a plate movable vertically along the posts, rollers carried by said vertically-movable plate and engaging the said inclined planes, springs surrounding the posts and engaging the under side of the verticallymovable plate, lazy-tongs having their lower links pivoted to said posts, rollers mounted on the vertically-movable plate and engaging with said lower links, a cage, tracks secured to the under side of'said cage, and rollers carried by the outer ends of the upper links and engaging with said tracks.
5. A fire-escape comprising a wheel-mounted body, a platform mounted to rock on the body, parallel shafts below the platform and having bearing in the end boards of the body, a cam on each end of each shaft for engaging the under side of the platform, sprocket-wheels on the rear ends of said shafts, a chain connection between the said wheels, a lever on the end of one shaft for operating the same, lazy-tongs supported on the platform, means for causing an upward movement of the lazytongs, and a cage supported by said lazy-tongs.
6. The combination with a wheel-mounted body, and an extensible fire-escape mounted thereon, of telescopic bars mounted to swing on the under side of the body, and screw-rods mounted in the outer end of the outer bar and provided with a foot at its lower end.
7. In a fire-escape, a support provided with posts, lazy-tongs pivoted to the posts, a platform mounted loosely on the posts and provided on its upper face with means for engaging the lower links of the lazy-tongs, and cooperating means on the platform and support for raising the platform.
