' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS SERVICE, or nnnw VALE, couNTY or MoNMoUTII, ENGLAND.
CRANE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,424, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed April 27, 1886. Serial No. 200,376. (No modeL) Patented in England February 7, 1884, No. 2,882.
To aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANCIS SERVICE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Ebbw Vale,in thecounty of Monmouth, and in the country of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Cranes and Apparatus for Hoisting,Loading, and Unloading Materials, &c., into and out of Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a new and useful hoisting apparatus which can be used for loading and unloading vessels, barges, 8w.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved hoisting apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same on line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view of one of the boxes. Fig. 5 is an end View of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 4.
A is a post, of any required length, fastened to a base, B. To this post, at the top, is attached the sliding bracket 0, having bearings 0 c for the pivot-pins d d ofthe swinging arms D D. E is arod having bearingin horizontal bracket 0 fastened to the top of the sliding bracket G, and in the horizontal brackets or hearing bin the base B. This rod is turned by operating lever F. This rod is also connected to the swinging arms D D by toggle leversfff f. Now, by moving the operating-lever F to the right or left, the swinging arms D D are swung in any direction. The
sliding bracket-frame O is so adjusted upon the post as to permit its sliding up and down the same for the purpose of raising and lowering the swinging arms D D. In order to do this, the horizontal bracket 0 is so arranged as to permit the rod E to slide through the same. Likewise the toggle-levers f f are so fastened to the shaft as to permit said rod to slide up and down on the same. To permit this, and also to permit the rod to turn the swinging arms D D, the said rod is made square- The sliding bracket 0 is raised or loweredby ropes g g, which are fastened to bracket at .0", passing over sheaves at d" d down to drum H, supported on brackets on the base B.
I is the hoisting-cable or chain, fastened at one end to boxes J, passing over sheaves k k, attached to swinging arms D D, thence down under sheaves b b of the base, around arm H, over sheaves Lon the sliding bracket 0 to the weights M M, where they are attached. This chain I is operated by steam-engine power, as shown in Fig. 2, or by manual power. As the boxes are lowered the weight is raised, thus counterbalancing the load.
, The boxes J J are constructed with hinged sides j j. These sides are held up in place, as shown in Fig. 5, by four pivoted lever-catches, o 0, which are pivoted to the sides of the box and connected to the supporting-bars or sliding arms on n, which are held to the box by bolts or plus a n passing through slots n in said arms. These arms are further held to the box by guide-plates me. The upper ends of these arms are bent, as shown in Fig. 4, and join each other at point a, where they are pierced with a hole, through which passes the cable-hook. (See Fig. 4..) Now, when the loaded boxesare required to be emptied they are lowered upon the proper place, and as soon as they come to rest upon the ground the sliding arms a 12 drop down the length of the slots of, which immediately raises the pivoted lever-catches 0 0 and releases their hold upon the hinged sidesjj, and allows them to fall down, as shown in Fig. 6. By this arrangeme'nt the boxes can be automatically opened by their own weight without the use of addi- 'tional ropes or cables.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- 1. The combination of the sliding bracket G and its hoisting-cables with the swinging arms D D, the toggle-levers fff f, and the operating-levers F, provided with a suitable handle, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the sliding arms at n, adapted to support the box J, with the pivoted lever-catches 0 o and the hinged sides j 3', all substantially as described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of December, 1884.
FRANCIS SERVICE.
