HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part bf Letters Patent No. 351,805, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed April .37, 1886. Serial No. 200,377. (No model.) Patented in England February 7, 1884, No. 2.882.
Be it known that I, FRANCIS Snavron, a subject of the Queen of .Great Britain, and a resident of Ebbu Vale, Monmouthshire, England, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Apparatus for Hoisting Materials, 85c. into and out of Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a crane for hoisting, loading, and unloading grain, fuel, and other materials and substances into and out of vessels, barges, bunkers, steamers, and railroadcars, more especially for hoisting articles from a canal-boat to asteamer, or vice versa, while the two lie alongside each other.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I is a front view'of my improved crane, showing it placed on a separate boat lying between a barge and a steamer. Fig. II is a plan view of the same.
Letters A A A A A* represent six vertical posts of the required length and thickness. These posts are securely fastened to the bottom U of the barge or boat B. On the outside of the posts A A A* A slide up and down in guideways a a a a the beams or plates O 0, having guides b I). These sliding beams or plates 0 C consist of pieces of metal of the required length and of sufficient width to freely pass up and down upon the said posts. The upper end of these plates are providedwith recesses, in
which revolve four pulleys, (two on one and two on the other plate.) To the outside of these plates 0 G are fastened the pins D D, which serve as axles upon which turn the metallic dislis E E, which may be held onto the said pins in any ordinary way. To the outer sides of these disks E E are hinged, by hinges e e, the crane-arms F F, which are made any length that use may suggest, and constructed in such a manner as-that they will be light in weight and at the same time of greatstrength' The extreme outer ends of these arms F F are provided with small lifting-arms G G, having axles which are journaled in suitable bearings secured to the crane-arms F F. The inner axle of each of these small arms G G is provided with cog-wheels g g. y
I I I I are four rods. Two of these rods rotate in suitable bearings fastened to arm F,
and two in suitable bearings fastened to arm F. On the outer ends of these rods are fastened the cog-wheels h h, which gear into cogwheels g g mounted on the arms G G. Each of these rods is provided with cranks J J, for the purpose of turning the same, which when turned cause the small arms tobe raised and lowered through the action ofsaid cog wheels.
The moving plates 0 C, with the arms attached thereto, are raised and lowered by the cables or chains L L. One end of each of these an. The cables from this point extend upward over pulleys a n, attached to the posts A A, and then down to drum 0.
The arms F F are raised and lowered on the pins D D by cablesp p, which are fastened to the arms at q q, and extend upward, passing ward over drum 0. By this arrangement the said arms can be raised and lowered independently of the plates 0 O, which is desirable in many cases.
R R are the cables for lifting the load, (one to each crane-arm.) These ropes are fastened to the drumO. From thence they pass under the pulley 8, attached at or near the bottom of the posts up over pulleys c a, mounted on the top of the bracket-plates "G O, thence down through a hole in the crane-arms F F, over pulleys c a, mounted on said arms, and then over and down to pulleys c 0 mounted on the small armsG G, when they may be hooked to the boxes U U.
The drum 0, is turned by gear-wheels'u, acted upon by a steam-engine or other motor. Any device can be used to fasten and support the drum in position.
When the boxes U U are loaded and ready to be lifted, they are drawn up by their respective ropes to the required height. The arms F F are then swung on their hinges from barge Y to steamer X, 'and from steamer to barge, without changing the position of the barge on which is placed the crane.
What I claim is 1'. In a crane or apparatus for hoisting, &c., the arms F F, in combination with the disks E E, attached to sliding plates or beams O 0,
