UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FELIX GUT, or norfriNeEN, NEAR zinnen, swIrzERLANn DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,886, dated Octoberr 20,18815.
Application filed August 22', 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LFELIX GUT, of Hottingen, near Zurich, Switzerland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boring- Drills, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to an improved boring-drill for enlarging the inner ends of the rivet or bolt holes of boilers, tanks, Ste., from the outside, so as to dispense .with the inconvenience connected with enlarging the holes in the coniined space at the inside of the boiler or tank; and the invention consists of certain details of construction and combination of parts, which will be described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved boring-drill. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of parts of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, c represents the spindle of a boring-drill, which is screwed or otherwise secured into a socket-piece, p. To the end of the spindle ct is splined a conical boring or drilling tool, b, which is set against ashoulder Vof the spindle, and secured by means of a spring-key, d, that is passed through a transverse hole, e, at the end of the spindle c. The socket-piece p is provided with alongitudinal groove, p', for the spline q of a ratchet-wheel, q,which is engagedby aspring-actuated pawl, 1, that is located in a socket-shaped recess of an oscillating lever, f. The socket-piece p is connected with ascrew-nut, m, by a couplingpiece, o, which latter is keyed to the socketpiece and seated 4by its. enlarged head in the lower contracted part of the nut m. The nut m is guided by longitudinal grooves m on xed guide-pins nu of the tubular casing A, within which the socket-piece p and its nut m are located.
A screw-bolt, Z, passes through the casing A down into the nut m, and is provided with levers g g, that are retained on the outer end of the screw-boltZ by a nut and washer, Z.
To the upper end of the casing Ais attached a guide-disk, h, by means of screws h,said disk being recessed for guiding the shoulder Z2 of the screw Z.
Below the disk h is arranged a guide-disk,
Serial No. 175,050. (No model.)
7c, which bears against the shoulder Z2, and which retains, together with the disk h, the screw Z in position in the casing A.
Between the disk hand the levers g g are interposed two spring disks or plateszi, which plates exert a tension on the levers, so as to cause thev turning of the screw Zwith the levers g.
By turning the levers g the screwZ is turned, and the nut m moved up, whereby the spindle c and drilling-tool b are drawn into the rivet or bolt-hole, so as to be ready to operate on the inner end of the hole to be drilled out.
The casing A and nut m are provided atopposite sides with elongated openings,by means of which the socket-piece p can be held in position in a vise when it is desired to remove the spindle a from the socket-piece p. These openings also serve for inserting and removing the connecting-piece o.
The boring-drill is worked as follows: The spindle a is inserted from the outside into the rivet or bolt hole of the boiler, tank, or other plate and the drilling-tool b applied to the spindle by the spring-key d. The boring-tool b is then drawn up against the inner edge of the hole to be enlarged by turning the levers g g, which turn the screw Z,and move the nut m and socket-piecep into the hole of the plate, while the casing A rests by its base on the outside of the same. The lever f is next oscillated and the hole drilled out by the tool b. The levers g g are turned from time to time,so
that the boring-tool is fed forward into the hole until the same is enlarged to its full eX- tent, as required for the head of the rivet or bolt. The boring-tool is then removed from the spindle, and the latter` inserted into the next hole, after which the boring-tool is secured again to the spindle, and the hole enlarged, as described. Y
Having thus described my invention, ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of thetubular casing A, guide-disks h and k, screw Z, having shoulder Z2 and levers g g,springdisks @interior screwnut, m, socket-piecep, coupling-piece o,ratchet q, oscillating lever f, having a spring-actuated pawl, r, and spindle c, having a detachable boring-tool, b, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a tubular casing, A, having guide-screws n n, guide-disks h and le,
IOO
and oscillating lever f, having a spring-aetuated pawl, 1", substantially as set forth'.
4. In a boring-drill, the combination of a` spindle having a shoulder, a detaehablebor- 1 5 ing-tool splined to the spindle, and a springkey inserted into' a transverse reeesis'atthe end of the spindle, substantially as set forth.
5. In a boring-drill, the combination of the tubular easing A, socket-piece p, ratchet g, osoillatingleverf, and aspring-aetuated pawl, zo
4, located in -a socket-holeof said lever, sub- 'stantialiy as set' forth. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed this spee'ieation'in the presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
FELIX GUT.
