JOSIAH BLOSS AND ELISHER J. WHITE, OF WILKESBARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MINING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 159,296, dated February 2, 1875; application filed December 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSIAH BLoss and ELISHER J. WHITE, of Wilkesbarre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Goal-Drills, of which the following is a specificatk n:
Figure 1 is a side view of an ordinary drill. Fig. 2 is a side view of our improved drill. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the outer end of the same, partly in section, through the line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail front view of the boring-tool.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents an ordinary drill, which is used to sink a hole in the desired direction to the depth of about three inches. B is the frame of the machine, the forward end of which is tubular, and is made slightly tapering, and has a screw-thread cut upon its outer surface, so that it may be screwed into the hole made with the drill A. The rear part of the frame B consists of two bars or arms, upon the rear ends of which are formed tenons, to one of which is hinged, by a pin, rivet, or bolt, one end of a short cross-bar, O, the other end of which is secured to the tenon of the other bar, detachably, by a pin, 0. This construction enables the bar 0 to be turned back for the convenient insertion of a long bit when required. To the cross-bar 0, near one end, is hinged the end of a cross bar, D, which has a hole or short slot formed in it near its other end, to receive a staple or eyebolt, d, attached to the cross-bar O, and which projects above the bar D far enough to receive a pin or key,
0?, for securing the said bar D in place. In the adjacent sides of the middle parts of the two bars 0 D are formed half-round notches, in which are cut screw-threads to fitinto the screw-threads of the feed-screw E, and serve as a nut for said feed-screw. To the outer end of the screw E is attached a crank, F, by whichit is operated, and upon its forward end is formed a square socket, G, to receive the shank of the bit H.
In using the device the frame B is screwed into the hole made with the drill A, the bit H is then inserted, the feed-screw socket G is applied to the shank of the bit, and the bar D is turned down upon it and secured by the pin or key (1 The crank F is then operated, and the bit H is forced into the coal rapidly. WVhen the bit H has been forced into the coal its entire length the bar I) is released and turned back, the feed-screw E is detached, and the bit H is withdrawn and replaced by a longer bit, and so on until the hole has been sunk to the required depth.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and" desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A tubular drill-frame, B, provided with tapering external screw at its lower end, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the two-part nut-bar O I), having detachable pins 0 d and staple al with drill-bit H and screw E, har'ing corresponding shank and socket, as and for the purpose specified.
