0. SMITH.
TOOL FOR DRILL PRESSBS.
N0. 336,762.- Patented Feb. 23, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrce.
OBERLIN SMITH, OF BRIDG-ETON, NEW JERSEY.
TOOL FOR DRlLL-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,762, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed July 6, 1885. Serial No.170,826.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OBERLIN SMITH, of Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Tools for Drill-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. side elevation of my improved tool with its counterboring end in position for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section upon line .10 x of Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the counterboring end of said tool and a vertical section of a piece within which it is operating.
Letters of like name and 'kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to furnish in a convenient and efficient form a double tool the parts of which may be successively used in the formation and counterboring or threading of holes; and to this end said invention consists, principally, in an improved device for use in drill-presses,composed of a forked stock that is adapted to be secured within and revolve with a drill-spindle, and a tool which is pivoted centrally within or between the forks of said stock, and at each end is adapted for use in forming, threading, counterbori'ng, or otherwise operating in connection with a hole, in combination with means, substantially as shown, whereby said tool may be locked in line axially with said stock, substantially as specified.
It consists, further, as a means for counterboring the inner end of a hole in a bar which is adapted to loosely fill and be revolved within the same, and a cutter that is pivoted within the lower end of said bar and is adapted by pressure against the end of the hole to be forced radially outward, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a stock, which, at its upper end, is adapted to fit into the stock of a drill-press, and has its lower portion forked and provided with a bolt, B, that passes transversely through the ends of the forks a, and by rotation is adapted to vary the relative lateral positions of said parts.
Pivoted centrally upon the bolt B, between (No model.)
the forks a, is a bar, 0, which at and at each side of its center is adapted to fit upon or within the contiguous faces of said forks, so that when said bolt is screwed inward to compress the latter said bar will be clasped between the same and firmly held in line axially with the stock. The ends of the bar G are adapted for use in drilling, reaming, counterboring, screw-threading, 820., and while they may be duplicates, if desired, said ends are preferably different, and one is adapted for use after the other-as, for instance, a drill upon one end and a screw-tap, countersink, or counterbore upon the other end.
For use in counter-boring a hole, I employ the means shown, in which a vertical groove, 0, is provided within one side at one end of the tool 0, and within the same is pivoted a cutter, D, that, when occupying its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, is entirelywithin the lines radially of said tool, and does not interfere with the insertion of the latter within an opening, e, which is substantially filled thereby. The cutter D extendsbelow the tool 0, and its lower end has a V shape, which corresponds generally to the shape of the end of a drill. The point (2 of said cutter end is, however, at one side of the axis of said tool, so that when pressed against the bottom of the opening 0 the lower end of said cutter is forced outward, so as to cause a lip, d, at the outer edge to cut into the contiguous side of said opening, such cutting operation being continued until said point d has a bearing at the bottom center of said opening, the result being the production of a counterbore or enlargement, 6, at the lower end of the latter.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits ofmy invention, what I claim is 1. An 7 improved device for use in drillpresses composed of a forked stock that is adapted to be secured within and revolve with a drill-spindle,and a tool which is pivoted centrally within or between the forks of said stock, and at each end is adapted for use in forming, threading, counterboring, or otherwise operating in connection with a hole, in combination with means, substantially as shown, whereby said tool may be locked in line axially with said stock, substantially as specified.
2.. As a means for counterboring the inner and of a hole, a tool composed ofa bar which side of the axis of said .bar, substantially as 10 is adapted to loosely fill and to be revolved and for the purpose shown.
within such ho1e, and is provided within its In testimony that I claim the foregoing I lower end at one side with a radial longitudihave hereunto set my hand this 1st day of many-arranged slot, in combination Withaflat July, 1885. cutter that is pivoted at or near its upper end I OBERLIN SMITH. Within and is adapted to swing outward from \Vitnesses:
said slot, and has its lower projecting end JAMES J. REEVES, made V-shaped with its point placed at one HUGH L. REEVES.
