Description

lB has its bearings,
@sind giant JOHN HALE, or scnAN ron, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 96,227, dated October 26, 1869.
IMPROVE!) DRILLING-MAGHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same..
To all whom it may concern.'l
Be it known -'that'I, JOHN HALE, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improve-` ments in Drilling-Machine; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.` My invention relates to the kind of drills known as bow or fiddle-drills and consists in a uniform feed, operated by a spiral spring, or its equivalent, and in the application of an extension-bar, whereby holes of considerable length may be drilled.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction .and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part' of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevationof my drill; and
Figure 2 is a side view, part in section, of the automatic feedingLdevice.
A represents a metallic fiame,.of suitable dimensions, secured to the table.
In the upper ends of the frame A the drillfspindle being constructed in any of the known and usual ways.
Under the drill-spindle runs an extension-bar, G, which may be placed at any point'desired, and held by a thumb-screw, D.
The feud of the har C, on the side of' the frame In testimony that B, in slots on the frame A, f'
where the drill is placed, is bent upward, and at a point directly opposite the drill a, it is provided with a metal casing, E, extending horizontally outward.
In the casing E is placed a plunger, b,snrrounded by a spiral spring, c, and so constructed with a flange or collar inside of the casing, that the spring will press said plunger a certain distance out of the easing toward the drill.
At the outer end of the plunger b, square withv the drill, is a faeeplate,d.
The work to be drilled being placed, in a suitable manner, against said face-plate, and the plunger pressed into the casing, it will be-seen, that as 'the drill operates, boring the hole. the spiral spring c, pressing the plunger, will feed the work straight to 4the drill, and by the usev of the extension-bar 0,11
hole may be drilled the samelength as this bar.
Having thus fully. described my inyention, What I claim as new, ters Patent, isl v The arrangement of the frame A, the drill-spindle B, extension-bar'C, set-screw D, casingE, plunger b, spiral spring c, and face-plate d, all substantially as shown and described.
I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 9th day of March, 1869. f JOHN HALE.`
