Description
L. GREEN. Mole-Plow.
N03 Patented July 23, 1861.
UNITE STATES PATENT Erica LOUBE GREEN, OF GREAT BEND, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS FOR DRAINING AND SUBSOlLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,66, dated July 23, 1861.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOURE GREEN, of Great Bend, in the county of Susquehanna, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification. 1
The nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of a changeable mole subsoil and draining plow, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents the main standard with all the other parts detached; Fig. 2, a plan of the same with the flange E attached. Fig. 3 represents the standard with the share B and flange f attached. Fig. 4 shows the same with the slim share 0 and arched flanges D D 'attached. An end view of the arched flange is shown at D.
The standard, as shown in Fig. l, is cast whole, with the flange E on one side and openings left at 0 0 for the lips of the flange E. The beam rests upon a a, and is held to the front of the standard by a clasp, s, and to the rear by a bolt passing through the slot 6, and held by nuts. This slot is for the purpose of setting the plow to or from the land in subsoiling or ditching.
B B is a double broad-winged share, cast so as to fit on the standard, and rests upon the flanges E E.
f f are inclined flanges, attached to the standard by means of the lips cc and bolts passing through the holes 1) 19. These fit the share, so as to form a continuous and smooth surface from the nose or point to the heel of the plow. v
The combination of the share B with the flanges ff is intended to be used in loosening up and mellowing old meadow and pasture lands, giving a free circulation of air through the soil, and also by the elevation of the wings at the center forming awater-course and drawing off surplus water. By detaching the flanges ff the plow may be used for cutting up and loosening the soil in the bottom of old ditches, and also for drawing off surface water on winter-sowed grain-flelds.
The narrow doublewinged share 0, in combination with the arched flanges D D, is intended for underdraining, forming the drain flat on the bottom and arched at top. The wings cut the earth loose at the side, and the elevation of the share in the center, aided by the tubes, forms the arch of the drain, which retains its shape for several years. The opening caused by the standard admits the air to the soil, and renders it more productive.
The single narrow-winged share A is intended for subsoiling and loosening up the soil in under-draining. The left-hand flange E can be easily detached, leaving the one-winged share Ato fit on smoothly. This can be used with or without the inclined flange at the rear. This plow is concave at the bottom, and the point of the share is rounded and brought to an edge, as in my other plows.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a single standard, with the addition of the various parts, may be made to perform a great variety of farming operations-such as draining, subsoiling, ditching, loosening up old meadows and old pasture-lands, and other uses not enumerated.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the standard H H with the shares A, B, and G, and the flanges E f and D D, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
LOURE GREEN.
