PATTERN FOR ARTICLE OF SLEEPWEAR Filed July 7, 1964 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States Patent M 3,279,069 PATTERN FOR ARTICLE OF SLEEPWEAR Max C. Schrank, deceased, late of Bridgeton, N.J., by
Rosalie M. Schrank, Bridgeton, NJ., Bernard S. Needle,
New York, N.Y., Norman D. Schrank and Leonard D.
Schrank, Bridgeton, and Harry Cassman, Ventnor,
NJ., executors, assignors to M. C. Schrank Company,
Bridgeton, N.J., a corporation of New Jersey Filed July 7, 1964, Ser. No. 380,953 1 Claim. (Cl. 3312) The invention relates to patterns for articles of sleepwear and in particular for those articles of sleepwear which are provided with bias cut legs for the nether garment and a bias cut back for the upper garment.
The invention is directed toward providing a pattern for garments of the type above mentioned using a minimum amount of material. Moreover, the invention also seeks to provide a two piece garment of sleepwear both of which portions are provided with bias cut elements to permit the garment to give and stretch during wear.
It is an important object of the invention to provide a two piece article of sleepwear at least a portion of both elements thereof being bias cut to permit the garment to give and stretch during wear.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a pattern for an article of sleepwear of the character described in which a minimum amount of material is required and used.
These and other objects, advantages, features and uses will be apparent during the course of the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of a preferred embodiment of the sleepwear of the invention in use;
FIGURE 2 is a rear view of the garment of FIGURE 1 in use; and
FIGURE 3 is the pattern layout of the garment of FIGURES l and 2.
In the drawings, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of the garment of the invention, the numberal designates the garment generally. Sleepwear garment 10 is seen to comprise (FIGURES 1 and 2) upper garment 12 and nether garment 14. Upper garment 12 comprise-s front 16 and back 18 which are joined together along seams 20. Sleeves 22 are of the type described in United States Patent 2,368,573, issued January 30, 1945, to M. C. Schrank. Upper garment 12 is provided with collar 24, front facings 26 and pocket 28. The front 16 of upper garment 12 is straight cut and the back 18 of upper garment 12 is bias cut as shown by the cross hatches on the figures which indicate the direction of the weft and warp threads.
Nether garment 14 is formed of a pair of legs 30 which are joined through the crotch portion along the lines 32 of FIGURES 1 and 2. Both legs 30 are bias cut as shown by the cross hatches which indicate the direction of the weft and warp threads.
The elements of the sleepwear garment of the invention which are bias cut permit the garment to give and stretch during wear so that the wearer of the garment is much more comfortable than she would be if the garment were all straight cut and did not give or stretch.
In FIGURE 3 there are shown a rectangular piece of material 11 showing the direction of the warp and weft threads and upon which a pattern for the garment of FIGURES 1 and 2 has been laid out. Upper garment front 16 is straight cut and is placed close to one corner 3,279,069 Patented Oct. 18, 1966 of material rectangle 11. One side of upper garment front 16 is close to the weft edge of the material and the bottom is close to the warp edge of the material. One leg 30, which is bias cut, is laid out so that its axis makes an angle of about 45 with the weft and warp threads. This first leg has been designated as 30-1 on FIGURE 3. It is placed on the material as close as possible to the lower warp edge and touching the innermost point of front 16 of the upper garment. Back 18 of the upper garment is laid out so that its axis makes an angle of about 45 with the weft and warp threads and is located very close to leg 30-1. Leg 302 is also laid out so that its axis makes an angle of about 45 with the weft and warp threads. It touches both leg 30-1 and back 18. Its outerrnost point touches the farther weft edge of the rectangular piece of material 11. The smaller elements of the garment, the balance of which are all straight cut, are laid out in the unused areas of the rectangular piece of material L1. These elements are collar 24, sleeves 22, pocket 28, pocket cuff 29, front facings 26 and collar facing 25.
Because of the novel manner in which the garment of the invention is laid out on the material 11, it uses very little more material than a straight out garment of a similar size. By way of example but without limitation of the scope of the invention, following is an illustration of the difference in material use between a straight cut garment of size 32 and a garment of size 32 cut in accordance with the teachings of the invention:
Straight cu-tlength 71", width 60" Instant inventionlength 74", width 60".
The upper garment of the instant invention is exactly the same size as an upper garment of a straight cut article of sleepwear. The nether garment of the instant invention is graded one-half inch smaller for one quarter of the human form which is equivalent to two inches around the entire pattern. The length remains the same as for straight cut garments of this type.
It can be seen that the pattern layout of the instant invention enables one to manufacture an article of sleepwear which is more comfortable than the prior art articles without using much additional material for the manufacture.
While a particular embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is apparent to those skilled in the art that modifications are possible without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:
A pattern for sleepwear having a two-legged nether garment and an upper garment, the nether garment and upper garment back of which are bias out and the balance of which garment is straight cut, comprising:
a rectangular piece of material woven with perpendicularly interlaced weft and warp threads;
the front of the upper garment being laid out at one corner of the rectangular piece of material as close as possible to the edges thereof with the bottom parallel to the warp threads and with the sides thereof parallel to the weft threads;
the first leg of the nether garment being .laid out so that its axis makes an angle of about 45 with the weft and warp threads and its outline touches the innermost point of the upper garment front pattern in the rectangular piece of material and its lowermost point is as close as possible to the warp edge of the material;
the back of the upper garment being laid out close to the first leg of the nether garment so that its axis makes an angle of about 45 with the weft and warp threads and the bottom thereof is closest to the upper garment front;
the second leg of the nether garment being laid out so that its axis makes an angle of about 45 with the weft and warp threads and it touches the other leg of the nether garment and the hack of the upper garment "and its outermost point touches the weft edge of the rectangular piece of material;
the sleeves, collar facings, collar, front facings and ornamentation being laid out so that their axes are parallel with some of the threads of the rectangular piece of material and placed in areas not occupied by other elements of the garment.
