PATENT OFFICE.

' smoothies.
Application mea February Y1:3, 1928. serial .No."zsazia This invention relates to hosiery and improvement isgdirected to means provi ed at the back of -alfstocking or other hose yfor establishing at each sidepfthe vertical centre thereof, suitably spaced therefrom, visual linear indications'. `that symmetrically follow the legcontour for the purppse of creating an fopticalfillusion where y the wearers leg' appearsjslenderized. Particularly with the present short skirt fashion, causing .a' considerable length of leg to be exposed, women whose legs are stouter than the average Vexperience the need for some means wherebyl the stoutl and sometimes ungainly appearing effect may be modified, so that the outlines of their legs may approximate in appearance curvatures that conform 4more nearly to a generally accepted 'standard ofleg beauty.`
So far as I am aware no attempt has heretofore been made of according such treati ment to a stocking 'as will havethe effect of slenderizing the appearance-of the leg upon whichit is worn, and in consequence, I believe my. invention to constitute a new and useful .branchin the art. of stocking manufacture. l
The linear indications at the back of the stocking may be produced by providing a Ldouble. thickness of material of the same character and shade or tintas that of the stocking itself,` or'if .desired to accentuate the indications they may comprise strips of` different character or different shade or tint,
v' or even of diiferentcolor. Or these indi-v cations may be'produced by any other available known means.
Other 'features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing: v i A Figure 1 isa perspective elevation of a stocking, shown` upon a wearers leg, and embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2is a rear elevation thereof. In said views let` fitted upon a leg' 2.
The stocking foot is shown as provided I with the `usual'extra thickness of material,
, indicated at 3, vfor-reinforcement purposes,
to increase its durability and wearing qualities. I
In the example of my invention herein illustrated this extra thickness of .material 1 indicate Aa f sto-cking,
linear indications 4,15 that are in spaced relation with respectto each other, and that vare each equi-distant from the true rear vertical centre of the stocking, said vertical centre being indicated in the example by a seam line 6.
Also it -will be noted that the indications 4,. 5 are 1n approximate parallelism, both with respect to each other and the seam line indication.4 y
It will' be appreciated that the linear indications are to be spaced apart a greater or less `extent to suit the girth or bulk of the leg 'uponi which the stocking is worn, the
spacing being greater. fon a leg of consid- A-erable bulk and less when the slenderizing effect to be achieved is with respect to a more moderate` sized leg. In consequence the extent of the spacing between the-linear indications will vary with the girth amplitude, of the stocking.
It will be noted.' that the reinforcement portions that Aextend upwardly from the heel do not overlay or connect with the seam,' so that the bulk of the seam is` not increased thereby, said seam instead lying exposed between the opposed parallel edges of said reinforcement. portions. Also it will be' observed that the opposed edges of said reinforcement portions have straight linesl `and are in equi-spaced relation with the seam and each other throughout the ex.- tent of said portions, from the heel reinforcement upwardly.
a rearwardly central vertical seam and pro-- vided withreinforcement at its heeli of portions. of reinforcement o f similar shape and,
size extended substantially the full length .of the seam at ,opposite sides thereof from 'heel to top, said portions of reinforcement being substantially parallel to the seam and having straight edges in close 'proximity thereto.
. 2. The combination in a stockinghaving a rearwardly central vertical seam and provided. with reinforcement at its heel only,`
I i i of portions of reinforcement of similar shape and size extended Ver`tica11y,xconverg I* ing upwardly and symmetrically disposed at opposite v sides of said seam, said portions in close proximity to said seam, to avoid clocks, thereby exposing thefseam to avoid increasing its bulk and producing a slen- 10 derizing eHect with respect to a leg encasedy by the stocking. i* 4 New York, February 15th, 1928.
