Description
(No Model.)
I. WEBER.
TOY TOP.
No. 327,043. Patented Sept. 29, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT UFFICE.
FRANK \VEBER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
TOY TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 327,043, dated September 29, 1885.
Application filed July 13, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnaii, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its objects to so construct a top that when its peg strikes the ground in the act of spinning it it will bounce or rebound,so thatthe hand or any convenient article may be passed under it and the top caught while spinning in such manner that it will continue to spin until exhausted, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a view of a top partly in elevation and partly in vertical section. Fig. 2 represents a detailed perspective View of portions of the same.
The letter A indicates the body of the top, which may be of the ordinary or any approved form. The body of the top is truncated at its smaller end, and is formed with a recess, B, extending upward a suitable distance into the interior of the body. At the termination of this recess a smaller recess, D, is formed for the purpose hereinafter described.
The letter E indicates a cylindrical plug, of elastic rubber or other suitable elastic material, which has a shoulder, 6, near its lower end, the lower end of said plug from the shoulder being in the form of a truncated cone, as shown. The cylinder portion of said plug fits in the recess B, the shoulder e abutting against the lower end of the body of the top. The upper end of said plug does not quite reach the termination of the recess, so as to leave a space, 0, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. In the recess D is inserted a plug, d, of rubber or other elastic material. The plugEhas a longitudinal bore, F, which extends centrally and entirely through it, and through this bore extends the stem G of the peg or plug proper, H, of the top. The said stem is directly in line with the plug d, but does not quite reach it, in order to give the stem a slight longitudinal play in the space 0.
The operation of my improved top is as follows: When the peg or plug of the top strikes the ground after leaving the top-cord. the body of the top is forced down upon the peg or plug proper, compressing the elastic plug. Immediately after the elasticity of the plug causes the parts to instantaneously assume their normal positions, causing the top to rebound or bound from the ground.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a top, of the truncated body having a recess at its lower end, the elastic pluglocated in said recess, and the plug proper, having a stem passing longitudinally through the elastic plug, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the truncated topbody, having recesses as described, of the shouldered plug fitting in the larger recess, the plug fitting in the smaller recess, and the plug proper, having a stem passing centrally and longitudinally through the larger elastic plug and adapted to abut against the smaller plug, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK \VEBER.
