JONATHAN D. LANE, OF ONONDAGA, MICHIGAN.
HORSE-COLLAR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,436, dated September 15, 1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN D. LANE, of Onondaga, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in HorseOollars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of horse-collars; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and application of a metallic strap especially designed for use upon that class of collars which open at the top, and by means of which the collar can be securely closed about the neck of the animal without the employment of straps and buckles.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an opentop horse-collar provided with my improved device. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the locking-lever thrown up ready to engage with the metallic strap.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a socalled open-top horse-collar, which is provided with the usual collar-pad, B.-
0 represents an articulated metallic strap, one end of which is secured in any convenient manner, but not detachably, to one side of the collar at its open end, while the opposite end of such metallic strap has secured to it a plate, D, in which are formed a series of openings, (1.
E is a suitable link, which is secured to the opposite end of the collar, the free end of such link having pivotally secured to it the cant lever F.
In practice, the collar is placed upon the neck of the animal, as in the ordinary manner, and its ends brought as near together as convenient, until the free end of the lever F will engage with the nearest opening or slot in the plate D. By now drawing down upon the lever, at the same time depressing the plate D, the lever draws the ends of the collar together and locks it upon the neck of the animal; and it will be noticed that by the peculiar outward bend of the lever F, when it is in its engaged and locked position, the strain upon it is brought in a direct line or nearly so with the body of its length, which prevents the lever from accidentally flying up and releasing the collar.
The pivotf of thelever F is at the mouth of a recess, f formed in the collar structure upon the outer face, as shown. This recess gives the cam part of the lever free play while the leveris being operated.
I am aware that a similar lever differently arranged has been used before in connection with links and chains as a hame-fastening, as the feature is shown in patent No. 313,927, of 1885. In that construction, however, the cam of the lever was liable to impinge upon the collar, and be thus prevented from opening. In my device, I provide for the free operation of the lever, and bylocating the seat at adistance from the joint of the collar I provide against injuringthe neck of the horse. The collar-pad also serves to protect the neck of the animal from injury.
I am also aware of Patent No. 279,751 of 1883, in which a cam-lever is located at the joint and projects from the collar. I deem the construction of the collar with the recess f important, as providing against the projection of the cam-lever.
What I claim as my invention is- In combination, an open-ended collar, A, having recess f, and provided with an articulated metallic strap, 0, the free end of which is provided with a plate, D, in which are formed a series of openings, a, and a link, E, with a cam-locking lever, F, pivoted at f in the mouth of the recessf, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
JONATHAN D. LANE.
