. WILHELMI WASHING MACHINE.
(No Model.)

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALENTIN VILHELMI, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
WASHING- MACHINE.
EPECIFZCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,257, dated September 15,1885.
Application filed November 7, 1834.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, VALENTIN WILHELMI, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain improvements in washing-machines of that class in which the suds-box is oscillated upon a supporting-stand; and the invention consists of a washing-machine the suds-box of which is constructed of wooden sides covered with sheet metal, and provided with corrugated ribs, and of a corrugated body of sheet metal ,that extends transversely between the sides and is attached thereto, the ends of said sheet-metal body being attached to the frame of the top opening of the suds-box, which opening is closed by a hinged lid.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved washing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting-stand of my improved washingmachine, and B the suds-box, which is supported by trunnions b b in recessed upper ends of the standards of the supporting-frame A. The suds-box B is oscillated by means of a handle, 0, that is attached to one of the sides of the same. The suds-boXB is constructed of wooden sides d, which are lined with sheet metal at the sides facing each other, and provided with ribs B, that are formed of corrugated sheet metal, the corrugations being slit at the upper and lower ends and beveled off toward the sides d (Z, the slit ends of such corrugations overlapping each other, and being carefully soldered to each other and the sides, so as to prevent the entrance of the suds. The body B of the suds-box B is formed of a continuous piece of corrugated sheet metal, which is carefully soldered to the sides (I d, and se- (No model.)
curely retained in posit ion by transverse screwbolts e e, which are arranged outside of the body B in the concave corrugations of the same. B are attached to the frame D of the top opening, through which the clothes are inserted into the suds box, the top opening being closed by a hinged lid, D, which is held in open position by a pivot-hook, f, of the handle 0, and an eye, f, of the lid D, as shown clearly in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
WVhen the clothes are placed into the sudsboX B, the lid D is locked to the frame D by pivot-catches, screw-bolts, or any other suitable retaining devices, f, soas to prevent the escape and spilling of the suds.
When the clothes are to be removed from the suds-box, the suds-box is secured in rigid pin, g, that engages a socket of avertical censhown in Fig. 2.
For removing the suds, the suds-box is proone of the convex corrugations, as shown in Fig. 1, so that by placing the sudsbox in inclined position and oscillating the same all the suds are readily discharged from the sudsbox into a suitable receiving-vessel.
Having thus described my invention,l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a washing-machine, a suds-box constructed of wooden sides covered with sheet metal, and having interior ribs made of corrugated sheet metal, and of a transverse body of corrugated sheet metal attached to the sides by soldering and transverse stay-rods, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
