G. F. VEIT.
TRUNK LOCK. No. 325,995. S Patented Sept. 8, 1885.v
WITNESSES: T INVENTOE (Eta, diwgwkv: 9 (WC V v T BY Y I ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE.
CHARLES FERDIN AND VEIT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
TRUNK-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,995, dated September 8, 1885. Application filed January 22, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FERDINAND VEIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lock which can be usedfor locking drawers, satchels, pocketbooks,seWing-machine cases, and otherart-icles.
My invention consists in the combination, with a lock plate, and with lugs projecting from the inner surface of this plate, of a pivot secured in these lugs, a hook swinging on this pivot, an arm or handle projecting from this hook through the lock-plate, a stop projecting from said arm, and a belt which cooperates with said stop and serves to retain the hook in its locking position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of a drawer provided with my lock, the drawer being open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same when locked. ,Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4. is an inside view of the lock detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the lock-plate, from the inner surface of which project two lugs, a a, which form the bearings for a pivot, 12. On this pivot swings the hook B, from which extends an arm or handle, 0, through the 1ock-plate. In the example shown in the drawings the arm or handle Ois made in the form of a ring; but it may be made in any form suitable for the purpose. The arm 0 is provided with a stop, 0, which, when the hook is brought in its locking posiiion, as shown in Fig. 2, is situated inside of the lock-plate in position to co-operate with a bolt, D, which is mounted on the inner surface of the locloplate, and which can be moved by a key, E. In the example shown in the drawings thebolt swings on a pin, d, and a revolving motion is imparted to it by the key E; but a bolt may be used which has a reciprocating motion.
When the hook-B is in its locking position, and the bolt D is moved into the position lock-plate,
shown in Figs. 2 and 4, it engages with the stop 0 and retains the hook in its locking position. Before the hook can be moved to its unlocking position, Fig. 1, the bolt must be thrown back out of the path of the stop a. In one of the lugs a are two holes, 9 g, and on one side of the hook is formed a rounded projection, h, which engages with the holes 9 g, and retains the hook in its locked or unlocked position.
In order to provide for the ready engagement and disengagement of the projection h and holes 9 g, the side lugs, a, are sufficiently elastic to spring lateral-1y, so that by pressure on the handle 0 to swing the hook B the projection h can be caused to snap into or out of the holes.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the drawer F, to which my lock is applied, cannot be drawn out before the hook is moved into the position shown in Fig. 2; but if my lock is applied to a fixed receptacle, F, with a hinged top, G, said hinged top is locked by the hook B, and it cannot be raised until the hook is moved to its unlocking position. From these examples it will be readily understood that my lock can be applied to frames of traveling-bags, satchels, and pocket-books;
also to trunks, sewing-machine cases, and.
other articles.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, with the lock-plate, the lugs projecting from the inner surface of this plate, and the pivot secured in these lugs, of the hook swinging on said pivot, the arm or handle projecting from the hook through the the stop projecting from said arm, and the boltwhich co-operates with said stop.
In testimony whereof Ihave'hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES FERDINAND VEIT. [n s] Witnesses:
