Description
G. SMITH.
' Burglar Alarm and Animal Trap.
No. 32,539, Patented June 11,1861.
" uNTTEnsTATEs PATENT oFEIcET.
GEORGE sMITI-I, or NEW Tonk, N. Y.
COMBINED ennemis-ALARM AND ANIIVIAL-TRAP;`
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,539, dated June 11, 1861.
To all 'whom tt may concern.'
Be it known that I, G. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Implement or Device, the Same being a Combined Burglar Alarm and Animal-Trap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1is an external View of my invention. Fig.` 2,l a longitudinal sectional 1 ment of the sear of the lock of a lire-arm barrel as hereinafter described, whereby the desired end is attained.
To enable thoseskilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention7 I will proceed to describe it. A
A, represents a tire arm barrel which may be of brass, or iron, and provided with a` cone or nipple a, as usual. This barrel may be attached to, or cast with a plate B, which serves as a stock and has screw holes b, at each end to admit of the implement being secured in proper position. The plate B, extends a considerable distance out from the breech of the barrel A, and has two lugs or projections c, c, on it, between which a hammer C, is fitted on a pin or axis cl. The back or outer end of the hammer C, has a friction roller c, attached,.against which a spring D, bears, said spring being of the flat form and secured to the plate B, by a screw f, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The back or outer end g, of the hammer C, is notched as shown at 7L, (Fig. 2,) and the end g, is of circular, or an approximate form.
Between the two lugs or projections c, c, there is placed a Sear E. This scar works on a pivot it', and is provided with a hook c', which, when the hammer C, is drawn back, engages with the'notch k, and retains the hammer in an elevated or cocked state, as shown in Fig. 2.
F, is a spring which bears against` the lower part of the sear E, and has a tendency to keep its hook z', in the notch To the lower end of the sear E, below its pivot L, there is attached a Wire Gr. This wire extends along underneath the plate B, and projects beyond the muzzle of the barrel A. To the upper part of the scar E, there is attached a ring H. e
From theabove description it will bessen that when the hammer C, `is drawn back, or cocked the scar E, may be` disengaged from it by pulling either the wire l G, or ring II, and consequently in a building where the hall runs directly through with a front and back door, both doors may be connected to the sear E, one by means of a cord or Wire, attached to wire G, and the other by means of a cord or wire attached to ring II, and hence if either door be opened an alarm will be sounded. Or, if there be only one door to the hall-one cord or wire may be attached to a window, or, one or both wires may be extended along the hall or through any apartment, softh in case of burglars entering the hou` .cords or wirefmay be unintentionally` tuated or moved by their feet and an alarm sounded. By this arrangement of@ fc the Sear E, itwill be seen that the imple-` ment can be applied in such a way aslto insure an alarm being sounded, as several cords may be made to extend from eachjeiid g of the device and spread out or diverge so asto cover a considerable area, and in many cases they may be attached to several doors or windows. 5
`If desired a plurality of barrels A, may be used all communicating with a single cone or nipple a. Y
The device may be used as an animal trap by simply baiting the end .of the wire G, directly in front of the muzzle of the barrel A, and securing the plate B, in proper position, Vthe barrel of course being loaded with a ball. In the part g, of the hammer, :at the notch I., a screw ax, is fitted, by adjusting which the hook z', may be made to lap to a greater or less extent over the shoulder of notch L, and the sear thereby set as sensitive as required. Y
Having thus described my invention ivvhat arm barrels A, substantially as and for the I claim as new and desire to secure by Letpurposes described.
ters Patent is The Sear1 E, arranged or pivoted as l GEO' SMITH 5 shown to admit of cords or chains being at- Vitnesses:
tached to both ends of it; in combination M. M. LIVINGSTON,
with the hammer C, and one or more re- C. W. CoWTAU.
