UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
oAsrnn n. SGHUBARTH, Or-rnovrnhfionnironn IsLANn.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming m of Letters Patent No. 32.595. dated July 23, 1861.
T0 all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Onsrnn D. SOIIUBAR'IH, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and Ido hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact descripposition for receiving the cartridge; Fig, 2, a
longitudinal section ofthesamewiththebreech closed in the position for'firing. .Fig, 3 is a perspective View of the combined guard and Fig.4 is a perspective view of the slide-key operated'by the saidlever. Fig. 5 is-a transversesection at x w,IFig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts-inthe several figures.
My invention consists in an improved device for securing and releasing a pivotedstoclr and barrel. i
To enable others skilled in the art to .make and use mytinvention, I will proceed to describe its construction. and operation. p j 'A represents a portion of the stock of the gumsecuredtby a joint, D, to the barrel B, the joint D being =.fastened to the barrel by means of ,a' dovetailed tenon, L, and screwsh M to the barrel: E is a slotted key adapted to slide beneath the stock, and, by means of a stop-lock, H, to secirreQthe parts in position whenclosed. 4 4
Dis a chambered breech-piece, pivoted'at J Eisa'chambered guard-and lever 'fulcrumedby means of a-piv'ot, f, to an eyebolt, Gfwhich also secures the key- E to the stock. A-lug, g,
projects laterallyi'rom each side. of the for- ;ivardend of the lever Fabovc it's fulcrum, -the said lugs engaging between ears on the sliding hey,-'in order'to advance and retract the latter as thelever is raised= and lowered, The hammer K, and other parts notspecifioally described may 'be of any suitable construction;

gun, the lever F is lowered, which retracts thekey It and allows the stock to fall, the breechpiece 0 being drawn back by the contact of the hammer, and the hammerfbeingbythe: same movement raised to half-cock by reason of the relative positions of the pivots I; andJ; The rear end of the barrel is now exposed, so
close" the breech, and thelever-guard being restored to the position shown in Fig. 2, drives the key forward'and secures the parts in position, the hammer remaining at half-cocki The piece is thus properly arranged for carry-f ing, or may be instantly cocked and fired.
The cartridge employed is entirely waterproof, being formed on its upper side with a projection which, without penetrating the me; I tallic casing, may receive the end of a wire-1 resting in an inverted percussion-cap at bottom. The hammer strikes the casing covering the end of the said wire, either by means of a projection on-its face or through the medinni of a springpin; or the cavity in the casing I may be filled with fulminating powder to'he eirploded by the hammer without the use ofa" The above arm is eflective andsnre', and not liable to explode by: accident, and capableof 'very'rapid firing. Its construction is simple and economical, and it is durable and not liar; -ble' to get out of repair. l 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new herein, and desire to secure'by' Letters Patent, is-
-The combined guard an so as to move in a vertical plane, andactiugy inconnection with the sliding key E, to secure 1 .or release the pivoted stocks, as set forth In testimony of which invention- I 'hereunto- Witnesses:
