ALVIN \VILKE, OF CAMDEN, NEV JERSEY.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,141, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed March 9, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN \VILKE, a citizen ofthe United States, and aresident of 0amden, New Jersey, have invented a certain Inr proved Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists ol. a toy representing an animal snapping its prey, the construction of the toy and the manner of using the same being fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are views showing the mode of using the toy, and Fig. 3 a sectional view of the toy, illustrating its construction.
The toy consists of a shell, A, made of sheet metal, wood, papier'mache, or other suitable material, in the semblance of the head of an animal, bird, or fish, as desired, this shell being made in halves connected at the rear by a hinge, a, so that they can be opened and closed at the front to imitate the snapping of the jaws of the creature represented.
To provide for conveniently holding and manipulating the toy, the two halves of the shell A have loops 1), for the reception of the thumb and finger or fingers of one hand.
Secured to the rear portion of the interior of the shell is one end of an elastic cord, d, to the opposite end of which is attached a fig ure, B, representing the prey oi' the creature in whose semblance the shell A is made.
In using the toy, the closed shell A is held in the hand, the figure B being within the shell. The hand is thrown forward and at the same time the twohalves of the shell are separated, so as to release the figure B, which is projected to the extent permitted by the clastic cord (1, the contraction of the latter drawing the figure rapidly back into the shell, the halves of which are then closed so as to imitate the snapping of the jaws of the animal upon its prey.
The closing of the halves of the shell upon each other may be effected by means of an elastic cord, f, connected to the same, or by means of a spiral spring; or the hinge may be provided with a spring for this purpose, and a spiral spring of light wire may, if desired, be used instead of the elastic cord (Z, although the latter is preferred.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of, the shell with the figure B and an elastic connection between the same and the interior ofthe shell, said connection being of such length as to permit the projecting of the figure from the shell, as set forth.
2. The combination of the shell composed of hinged sections each having a loop, I), the figure B, and an elastic connection between the same and the interior of the shell, as set forth.
3. The combination of the shell composed of hinged sections, the figure B, and an elastic cord, 1!, connecting said figure to the interior of the shell, said. cord being of such length as to permit the projecting of the figure from the shell, as set forth.
i. The combination of the shell composed of hinged sections, a spring for drawing said sections together, a figure, B, and an elastic connection between said figure and the interior of the shell, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALVIX \VILKE.
