CHRISTIAN XVOBITO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JULIUS KAMSLER, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,142, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed April 12, 1889. Serial No. 306,993. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN WoBITo, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a toy to act on the principle of the return-ball; and it consists in providing the body of a toy (which by preference is in the form of a bird, but may be in any desired form) with wings, which are 0perated in the flight of the toy by the elastic cord by which it is returned to the thrower.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved toy as applied to use; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly broken away and in section.
A represents the body of the toy, by preference in the form of a bird and made of metal, soft or hard rubber, celluloid, paper, or other suitable material. The body is hollow, and to each side is attached by a hinge a a wing B, constructed to fit and to be normally held flat against the sides of the body, as shown in Fig. 2. The wings are held in this closed position by an elastic cord or spring I) and the rods 0 c, which connect the said cord or spring to the inner surfaces of the wings B, a slot (l being formed in each side of the body for the said rods to pass through to connect and operate the wings.
C is the return-cord of elastic rubber attached at one end to a ring 6 to fit upon the childs finger. The other end of this cord passes through a small orifice f in thebodyA and reaches back to the juncture of the rods 0 c and cord or spring 1), whereit is connected, preferably, to the ring f, as shown in Fig. 2.
The spring Z) and cord 0 are of equal tension, and when there is no strain on the cord 0 the spring Z) draws back the rods 0 c to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and closes the wings B. When the toy is cast away and drawn back by the cord 0, the strainon the said cord draws the rods 0 0 forward, stretching the spring I) to the position shown in Fig. 2, thus opening the wings. Then the springb overcomes the strain on the cord 0,
the wings are closed again, so that when the toy is caught in the hand the wings are closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a toy comprising a main body, wings hinged thereto, a spring for holding the wings normally closed, a return-cord, and links connecting the spring and return-cord to the wings, substantially as described.
2. The body A, having openings (1 f, in combination with the hinged wings ll, rods 0, connected thereto, spring I), and return-cord O, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHRISTIAN 'WOBITO.
