SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,777, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed January 29, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Catapults or slung-Shots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to that class of shooting or missile-throwing instruments properly known as toy catapults, which usually comprise a leather or other flexible pocket for the stone or other missile and one or more elastic straps connected with the pocket and adapted to project the missile therefrom by stretching the elastic and suddenly releasing the pocket in a well-known manner, it being also common to employ a forked stick as a handle where two elastics are used, one of the elastics being attached to each branch of the ork.
My invention has for its primary object to improve the construction of devices of the described character, whereby the elastic is rendered more durable and efficient and less liable to become entangled and twisted, and whereby, further, its attachment to the flexi-' ble pocket may be made durable and permanent.
Another object of my invention is to provide the ends of the elastic with improved means whereby they may be quickly and securely fastened to the branches of the fork without the employment of cords, as heretofore, and without cutting or weakening the elastics and rendering them liable to snap, while at the same time making such means contribute to the elasticity and efficiency of the elastic.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

taching the elastics to the fork. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken lengthwise of the pocket and part of the elastics shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of one of the sockets,illustrating a modification hereinafter described.
In carrying out my invention I employ two cured, so as to form a knot or lump which prevents the elastic from being pulled out of the cap 4, the knot or lump 6 being formed after the end of the elastic has been inserted. By this means it will be seen that the elastics 1 2 are free to rotate in the sockets 4 by virtue of the round formation of the elastics, and hence the liability of the elastics to twist and become entangled is avoided. These caps or sockets 4 are preferably formed of coil-springs, so that they may be utilized as a screw in being secured on the branches of the fork and thus better grip the latter and prevent displacement, and so that, further, I
their upper extremities will bend or yield in the direction of pull on the elastics 1 2, and thus while adding elasticity avoid cutting into or severely pinching the elastic and rendering it liable to break..
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 I provide one end of each of the elastic portions 1 2 with a knob 6, and in order that this knob may be inserted into the socket 4 I providesuch knob with a perforation through which a string may be passed and then passed through the socket and by stretching the rubber reduce it to such small diameter that it may be pulled through the contracted end of the socket and when once within the socket will, hold the elastic under ordinary circumstances from being withdrawn. If desired,
however, a short stick or other object 7 a may be inserted through the perforation after the knob has been passed through the mouth of the socket at, thus absolutely insuring against the withdrawal of the knob.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new and useful article of manufacture a device for the purpose described having in combination a pair of elastics, a missile-pocket attached thereto, and a socket detachably secured to the outer end of each elastic and adapted to receive a stick or fork, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new and useful article of manufacture a device for the purpose described having in combination a pair of round elastics, a missile-pocket secured thereto, and a socket at the outer end of each of said elastics and on which said elastics are rotatably secured, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new and useful article of manufactu re a device for the purpose described having in combination a pair of elastics, a missilepocket secured thereto, a socket having a contracted end through which said elastics are passed and knotted, said sockets being adapted to receive a fork, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new and useful article of manufacture a device for the purpose described having in combination a pair of elastics, a missile-pocket secured thereto, a socket consisting of a coil-spring secured around the end of each of said elastics, said elastics being knotted within said springs, substantially as set forth.
5. As a new and useful article of manufacture a device for the purpose described having in combination a pair of round elastics, a missile-pocket secured thereto, a fork, a spring coiled around each branch of said fork and each of said elastics and said elastics being knotted within said spring, substantially as set forth.
6. As a new and useful article of manufacture a device for the purpose described having in combination a pair of elastics, a missile-pocket secured thereto, a socket having a reduced or contracted opening through which said elastics are passed, and a perforated knob or knot formed on the inserted en d of each of said elastics, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
