- This invention consists in anovel mode of constructing the shoulder or holding flange with its accompanying sectional slide packers, as hereinafter shown, whereby important advantages are attained and secured, such as getting greater strength from the use of a given amount of metal, at the same time securing the convenience of applying cheap and durable packing, also, that of conveniently applying and retaining grease, or other lubricating matter, the same being allowed to circulate freely through said holding flange or shoulder, instead of having to pass over it in order to reach the moon plate, or other coupling, or back fastening employed, the same being protected by the use of the slide packers, accompanied with gasket, moon plate, or other back fastenings, provided with protecting flange by which arrangement, also, dust and grit are effectually excluded from the wearing parts, all of which advantages greatly diminish expense and trouble.

AXLE-COLLAR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIPHALET S. SCRIP- TUBE, (assignor to himself and Edward IVhite,) of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Axle-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a View of axle, and axle arm, with my improved collar and slide packers attached. Fig. 2, out section of the same; Fig. 3, top View of divided moon plate employed; Fig. 4:, front View of the same; Fig. 5, top view of slide packer used; Fig. 6, an edge view of the same; Fig. 7 is a back surface View of my improvedcollar, showing the perforated cellular flange employed; Fig. 8 is a cut section of the same; Fig. 9 is a front face view of the same opposite side of flange, as shown in Fig. 7.

This invention consists in anovel mode of constructing the shoulder or holding flange with its accompanying sectional slide packers, as hereinafter shown, whereby important advantages are attained and secured, such as getting greater strength from the use of a given amount of metal, at the same time securing the convenience of applying cheap and durable packing, also, that of conveniently applying and retaining grease, or other lubricating matter, the same being allowed to circulate freely through said holding flange or shoulder, instead of having to pass over it in order to reach the moon plate, or other coupling, or back fastening employed, the same being protected by the use of the slide packers, accompanied with gasket, moon plate, or other back fastenings, provided with protecting flange by which arrangement, also, dust and grit are effectually excluded from the wearing parts, all of which advantages greatly diminish expense and trouble.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my improvements or invention, I will proceed to describe it.
In Fig.1 letters A A represent an axle arm, and a portion of its main bar, or body, B the holding flange or collar, with its terminating neck, or tube, B B, at which place may be seen abears mouth slit; G C, are sectional slide packers, which are made in two parts, not only for the convenience of applying and operating, but to allow of the yielding, or contracting, of the same, inconjunction with the bears mouth collar neck, under the power of the bolt and nutD (Z in case of shrinkage of timber or other causes. E E represents the hub coupling, which in this case I employ the divided moon plate, arranged nearly in accordance with that of my patent of December 18th 1855, as-a con venient substitute for the common male axle moon plate, back screw, or other backfastening couplings either of which may be arranged to go, and be used with the above improved collar and sectional packers, gasket, &c. e 6 represent the joints, orbolt apertures, catch, &c., which bolts m m, are there represented as being short, though are to be long enough to pass through a carriage wheel hub, when put to use therewith.

D, the bolt passing through the axle, slide packers, and collar neck, or tube, securing the same thereto, as well as to serve to loosen the sectional packers c 0, when required to be slid back or forth, or taken entirely off, (as the case may be,) and again securing them, as well as the collar neck snugly to the axle. E E, divided moon plate coupling, 6, the back end of the catch, near which is shown the concave, or half hole, that shuts over the bolt X. F F shows a gasket beneath the back projecting flange of coupling E E and directly forward of the slide packer heads 0 0. This gasket serves to check and retain the grease as it tends to flow back from the cells I) b, an operation which will be augmented by the action of the hub box (which is to be capped air tight at its outer end) as it will have play back and forth upon the axle arm when the vehicle is in motion, serving in the capacity of an air pump in forcing the oil or grease through the holes at b b in to the back cells, there maintaining a supply of lubricating matter that will ever keep smooth and glib that part which is the first to get dry and wear out in the old plan of back fastening collars.
In Fig. 3 letter E represents the inner side of the divided moon plate E showing its back projecting flange within which the gasket F F and packer head 0, (as shown in Fig. 2) e 6 shows the catch or hook look as the coupling plate is closed together and secured by bolt X.
Fig. 4 is a front view of moon plate, as being partly open, letters E E showing the outer plate circle while a shows the side which is made a sort of hinge joint, by one of the hub bolts X serving as a pintle to the hinge joint, while at e e the lock part and opposite bolt cavities are shown.
In Fig. 5 letter C, shows a top view of sectional slide packer; C represents a bolt slot in the same, and 0 the packer head or mm.
In Fig. 6 at letters C C are shown the front, or forward part of packer head.
In Fig. 7 6, represents the short cells in the back surface of the collar 6 6, showing the long cells, as filled with leather packing; while 6 shows the cells ready to receive the packing showing two holes to admit of fastening the same in its place.
In Fig. 8 B B shows the periphery of collar shoulder in flange form, 6 2') showing the center flange and situation of holes through the same, B the collar neck or tube, Fig. 9 being a front face view of collar, opposite side of flange, as shown in Fig. 7, letters I) 6 showing the short cells and grease holes through the same as also shown in Fig. 7, '6 showing the long, or packing cells, with two holes through center flange, Z) 6 showing cells filled with leather packing, secured by wooden pegs, passing through the same and the holes in center flange, taking the leather in opposite cell, thereby securing the same permanently, which it is intended to have last as long as the wagon, or carriage may endure.
I do not claim the moon plate coupling E E, as used and set forth in this case, nor do I claim the gasket, used in conjunction therewith, the same having been adopted and described in my patent axle coupling of December 18th 1855.
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The metallic cellular collar, made, in the manner shown, and for the purpose, or purposes herein set forth and described.
2. The sectional slide packers, made in the manner, and for the purpose herein described.
3. The metallic cellular collar, the sectional slide packer, with its flange in combination with the protecting collar, flange, and gasket, when the same shall be used, substantially in the manner as shown, and for the-purpose or purposes herein set forth and described.
